like if there is any gap at any mount, its better to shim it then just pull it in with the bolts. This conflict has me seeking advise

I'd go with the process that the BMW manual recommends and shim per their instructions.  Pulling it in with bolts will add stress to the frame that it's not designed for.

Final. Flat Olive Drab (or Camo Green) - Official Australian Army since the 50's I think. Cheap, easy, aesthetically pleasing (to my eye) practical, cool etc etc Smile

When using K1100 throttle bodies and injectors - which fuel pressure regulator should I use? K1100/K100?

The K100 FPR is the right one. It regulates to 2.5 bar and the later 16v FPR will regulate to 3 bar so you would end up running rich.

Thanks Rick.

Another Question:

Are the RS indicators/mirrors any good? I.e do the mirrors offer a decent view (also, Ill be using LT bars)?

I ask, as I have a cracked indicator lens and a missing mirror glass to replace - OR - just buy cheap 'fold down' enduro style mirrors, cheap dirt bike indicators - done....

Also, any suggestions for:

A) upgrades to the front light globe
B) after market 'driving lights' - im thinking small LED ones, mounted under the front headlight/fairing.

The RS and RT/LT all the mirrors give a very good view of your elbows and the RS ones have a real bad habit of coming off and it doesn't take much, so much so that many put a lanyard on the mirror so it just falls down and dangles till you stop.
Are you going to use a fairing If so get some mirrors that will fit on where the std mirrors fit and stick up a bit.
If I were going to mount spot lights again I would make a mount to fit where the mirrors fit.
I use 2 x 100W Narva lights on mine but I have the luxury of a 60 Amp alternator.  I mounted them in the holes where the police lights were and they are fairly stable.

This is an LT/RT fairing there is a plate under the mirror mounts that take the top mirror.
Separate posts as every time I try more than one pic to a post my darling little piece of crap drops its bundle.
Front indicators for an LT are in the fairing not the mirrors.

Thanks for the pics Rick.

Ended up taking the cheap option.

I do like the look of the RS mirror/indicators, but as I mentioned, I have a missing mirror glass and a broken indicator lens. TO fix will be $$$ and it may not result in the best outcome for my RT/A (Road Tour/Adventure) Smile

This is what Ive bought so far, still deciding on the mirrors:

Spot Lights (Will mount under headlight)

LED Indicators

Handguards

One of the blocks has a stripped thread so maybe it is fairly common.

Did you mean 15mm of thread in the hole, my thread list has a 15mm thread but would not be used in aluminium.

Out of curiosity, I'll go nock the bolt out of the rs which I know has never been out before, seems odd to me that three out of three engines, from completely different sources are the same. All have heli coils , and only 1/2 the 35mm hole is threaded.

I had a look at my 2 other engine blocks over the weekend. All of them had a section of smooth bore, the rest threaded, then a 15mm helicoil inserted....

Thats 3 from 3.

The end where they start cutting the thread. One would have full thread all the way to the bottom and the others more of a lead in.

And if you want a left handed thread just turn them the other way

The steering head bearing adjuster was an absolute pain to get back on. even after cleaning al the threads up for an hour, it was still a total PITA to screw on. very very tight. will make adjusting it majorly difficult....

Would a BMW dealer have a die capable of cleaning out the threads on the steering stem? The bearing lock bolt thingy screws into the adjuster thingy fine, smooth as. But the stem going into the adjuster is rough as!

You get them from under a Holden Commode air filter box. Same as under the battery tray on the K100 so get some extras when you go to the wreckers.

12141459190 (I have a 2001 ETK that allows me to look up old part numbers that have disappeared from online fiches.)

Apparently NLA since it doesn’t show on any online parts fiche.

Although similar to the battery tray ones, on K75/100s the 12141451909 was only used for ICU mounting.

Curiously, there were used for battery tray mounting on R80/100s though.

Hands up who's seen/used one of these before?

Around the World On a K100 - Page 7 Thread10

Got me out of trouble today. Thanks to the old man and his humble tool chest residing in my bedroom to the delight (disgust) of my beautiful wife.

Called ProCycles in St Peters just to see if they had a 22mm fine thread die - nope they dont, but the so called master technician recommended a thread file. Quick google search resulted in an image similar to the one above. I recognised it immediately as a tool I had in the tool chest and had indeed seen all my life and always had no the slightest clue of its use.

Well, now I certainly do!

The side labelled "NU-THRED 0.75" did the trick nicely. took me about an hour of carefully filing, then testing with the adjuster nut, re filing, re testing etc. But now its like (almost) new!

Charlie, I also called 2 local engineering shops. one didnt answer the phone and the other couldnt do it...so thread file it was.

Cheers Rick and Duck for the rubber thingy info.

I have a brand new battery holder one here, already fitted to the bike - as I broke one of the originals when stripping the gearbox.

Can you totally confirm they are the same bolt size and the same height as the black box mounts? If not, Ill go and pull the battery holder off and have a look, but I seriously couldnt be arsed. A hot bath is awaiting to be truthful.

Anyways, either way, if the battery holder and the blackbox rubber bits are more or less interchangeable, ill order one (or 2, if they have the same thread size, but are of different heights...surely they are the same...)

exactly what  was thinking ...those tools are great ....but unfortunately many modern day blokes take the easy way out and declare that if they don't have a die, it cant be done .......just lazy ...

glad you found something Floyd ...and the courage to persist ...thumbs up !!! Around the World On a K100 - Page 7 112350

btw you can get those rubbers from  rs components

be carefull as there are many variations of height width and thread length .. I paid about 4 buck each ...but some are 12 each ...

mine still vibrate and move as expected ...rather than some old and cured through mass of black stuff that don't move at all ...from the  20 + year old commodores

just a heads up

Aren't they just great for fixing threads.
It not a real good one it hasn't got the ends for doing internal threads and they are the difficult ones.

No drama, will be done by breakfast.

I better order the tyres now then....

Let the debate begin....Im reading through other tyre posts etc...but non the less....

If you were setting off around the world on this bike, what tyres would you shoe it with?

Its running the K1100LT front, and K100RS rear.

Getting a soft style dual sport tyre for the rear is fairly easy I think, but getting an 18" for the front is a different story. How do you guys feel about using a rear tyre on the front?

Or are the road based dual sports a bit of a wank?

I plan on raising the fork brace and fender about an inch to get good clearance for mud and muck. Would 20-25mm long, thick dia. aluminium tube as shims and longer bolts do the trick? Or would you loose a lot of stiffness?

Mostly for sidecar use but I've run rears on the front with no problems before.

My TDM900 was the same, if I wanted to run a dirt tyre up front it had to be a narrow rear.  I think I used a 4.00-18 Metzeler Enduro 2 in that case.

When I build my rat, I'll be going that way again.
