Hello, looking for some inspiration. As if I don't have enough to keep me busy, I would like to try and get an 84 RT to a point where I can start it to see if there are major problems. I understand all the cleaning/wiring problems but would like to figure out how to go about getting things set up to have a go at starting.
The engine and gearbox are still in the frame, the instrument cluster is missing as is L/H instrument loom.
Apart from having the clutch lever pulled in, is there anything else that would stop it from starting (I understand
that all sensors need to be connected where possible)
Anyone done this please?

RT, put in some petrol and give it a go.
If it doesnt sart plug in something else.

I was actually surprised how little you need connected to get the bike to at least turn over if not start completely.

Bob, When I had the Yellow Canary apart after the Narrendera trip, I tried the same thing, ie, fuel tank off to one side, all computers plugged in etc, except for the instrument cluster. No joy. Plugged the instrument cluster in and she went first kick. So, there must be some sort of interconnection between the instrument panel and the rest of the machine's worx and jerx. I did this to keep access to the coolant filler, after re-installing the radiator.

As an aside, I dropped the old girl the other day at the top of my driveway (Uuugh!!!) Only real damage was the RHS mirror pod (glass still intact) and my pride. Got a replacement from the BM shop in Brisbane ($135!) and it was in v.poor condition, but complete with glass. Tried to "donk" the mirror out by putting it face down on a thick felt pad. Of course the bloody mirror broke! Should've listened to RickG's advice and used cable ties to pull it off. It's in at the paint shop at the moment getting Yellow.

Firstly I apologise for making the heading of this topic capitals, not sure how THAT Happened.
I think I can steal the instrument cluster from the 90LT while the owner isn't looking ( actually took it off today to do the fork seals) to get over that hurdle.
Sorry to hear about the canary, I went for a spin yesterday and kept in the back of my mind not too drop it ,the town was full of P plate students on holidays and Grannies babysitting younger schoolies. I almost got knocked over twice. Someone once posted, watch the wheels, not the driver and it saved my rrrs yesterday.

I better get the redone injectors back in this thing and steal anothr battery and put the radiator back on. I'll leave the exhaust off to see what sort of noise actually comes out really naked.

Maybe I should start another resto thread.

to get a start bob ...you wouldn't really need to have even the radiator on .....
yes good idea about the clutch on the old girls ...and possibly redo the connections to the tank and under seat computer ....might be an idea to check the cabling under the tank for rats nests etc
have you confirmed that the fuel pump actually pushes fuel through and you get a bit of a spark or something ?

Thanks Charlie, I'm going to use the tank and fuel pump setup from the black beast I am playing with at the moment. I guess I would have to have the temp sensor thingo attached and connected to allow ignition?
Getting excited here but not telling anyone from the home office as it is supposed to be strictly a parts bike.
Do they need the back pressure from the exhaust to get going?

They run without a pipe on the exhaust but sound a bit strange and dont run it for too long so the engine gets real hot as the fresh air gets to the very hot exhaust valve and can buckle it.

Thats great, I'll re install if the bike starts, didn't want to go to the trouble if it doesn't. Have to wait till the weekend now, Grandbaby sitting so spending most days hiding out amongst dangerous stuff to discourage questions.
