The tatty paintwork on my discs really make the bike look shabby and I want to repaint it....



The discs themselves are in good order. My question is what paint/primers do I need and should I be using heat proof paint?

i used gloss ...but after a few k s you wouldnt notice ...i thought gloss would be easier to keep clean

Hi 88KE,

You will need some sort of etch primer to start with. Halfords sell 'U-pol acid 8' in aerosol cans and I am a fan of Plastikote for top coats: I sprayed my sump cover gloss black 5 years ago and it still looks as good as new.

Thanks Paul. I'll be passing a halfords in Dublin tomorrow and I'll pick up that primer. I've used the Plastikote myself to good effect on other jobs. So thats a goer! Cheers

All that lovely shiny alloy and it gets covered in paint.
I purchased a cheap buffing outfit -bench grinder and a couple of wheels and compound - and shine whatever comes off, alloys and stainless come up lke new. I could waffle it off as heat dissipation but truth be known , I just like shiny things.

BTW 88KE, Plastikote responds well to low temperature baking; Say 70 degrees C in a domestic oven for an hour or so. It means that parts can be painted, baked and refitted in a couple of hours.

I just did mine last week.
Cleaned them up with a brass wire wheel on the drill.
Than degreased and used an etching primer.
Washed that of and when dry I sprayed black caliper paint .
To tape/mask of the disk a vinyl electric tape makes quick work to get clean around the center disk


Marten ( prepping and painting for two weeks now!)

I media blasted these with soft pellets, taped them off and sprayed them in satin black 2pak, then whacked them into the spray booth oven for a few hours at 70c. The fork legs, callipers and wheels got the treatment, too. It's durable and very nice to look at...

I must say I too have used Plastikote for a variety of jobs and have found it to be a first rate product, and used it on the very job you are contemplating doing 88.

Thanks for the pics guys. I aspire to restoring my wheels and forks to looking that good. A clean k-bike is amazingly current looking in its design, a real sign of a classic.

It's interesting to notice the different effect between GIDH's discs painted out over the rivets and Big D's with just the dish done. I shall study it more before deciding what my finished ones will look like. I picked up the U-pol acid 8 today and I'm planning to tackle into it next week when the family is away for mid term. Then again the urge to ride without having to apply in triplicate to "management" might overtake me!

Well a couple of evenings prepping and painting et Voila......



The forks could really do with being bead blasted but that can wait (as could the wheels). Everything clearned up pretty well with a brass wire cup in the drill including the boltheads and fittings. I couldn't get the plastikote and didn't have enough here so I just used 2 coats of Halfords satin black.

Something had always bugged me about the front of the bike that I couldn't quite put my finger on and it wasn't until I'd stripped it completely, like the kerryman who sat up wondering where the sun had gone, it finally dawned on me......odd discs! One painted (with a few reminents of paint left on the back) and one not bare..never painted at all.

In the end I decided I preferred the look as per GITH's pic further back the thread (thanks for posting that man!). Also big thanks to Sidecar paul for the tip on the U-Pol Acid 8. I was well pleased with the adhesion this stuff gets as tested when getting some overspray off the disks.

Now what's next on the list....Radiator cover mesh methinks

One older disc? BMW start to paint the disc hubs satin black from -86 models on.
Also complete discs that I have ordered afterwards have had painted hubs.

Yes Inge, one older I'd say. The bike is '88 but the unpainted one looks older. They have almost identical (only .01mm difference) in thickness though so I'll get a few thousand more K's out of them.
