Just a real quickie guys as I gotta get back to studying. The windshield was a little to soft to use with my 3M professional headlight polishing kit so I went ahead a bought some more Novus which I've used in the past with success. Much better results with the hazing completely gone. Smile

Final update on the tank I think. Putting the aluminzed foil sheet over the Dynamat on the critical area above the head that Charlie talked about in a previous post. Also, couldn't figure out why I was having trouble getting the left side of the tank down, as I carefully trimmed the mat to clear the frame, until I discovered another piece of rubber gone bad. I think I've got a new maxim to add to TWB's, "It's usually the simple things" and that would be: "It's the rubber stupid!" Very Happy

Had plenty left over so went ahead and put some foil on the crank side just for giggles.

but get a new one it'll help with vibrations

under tank looks great....

Thanks Charlie I was eying that stuff at my favorite supply store and wondering how well it worked. I've been using RuGlyde to pop the tank on, but than I finally remembered it is designed to dry out and I'm sure this was not helping the rubber every time I removed the tank. Embarassed Well, the grommets are only 86 cents so a cheap lesson as K-things go, lol!

I guess I'm just an odd old thing Charlie, but I really enjoy the process of re-doing a machine, along with a little re-engineering as Bert would say, and than just running the snot out of them. Once enough stuff gets worn out or blown out I enjoy re-doing them all over again. I've never had a motorbike that I don't use for commuting, at least light touring, and fairly regular summer track days to help keep skills up. I plan on doing the same with the "Bismarck" once she is done. Smile

Doing the valve clearances and pulling the shims this evening.
Just read thru this article by Rob Lentini and he recommends running the intakes on the tight side and the exhaust on the loose side of spec. Can one of you motor guys tell me the advantage of this ?

The inlet will open earlier and closes later & the exhaust closes earlier and opens later which can give slightly more cylinder chargh and silghtly more compression.
An advance in the ignition timing by 2-4 deg will also help when you do that.
Personally I would rather just put a better set of cams in it and really make it get up and boogie.

Sadly Rob Lentini passed away from cancer in 2004 he was a very helpful guy. The only thing of his that I have read which I disagree with is his suggestion of using K & N air filters. They let in too much dirt in the tests which I saw done and also they produce no more power than no filter at all or the proper filter in place. The filter is not the limiting factor in the way our bikes go.
Regards,
K-BIKE

one of the theorys about valve expansion is that the exhaust valve grows more from the heating effect og .

besides that it tends to accumilate more gum and stuff that passes throught the burn process...and i would suggest that a nice click on closure when it comes off cam, would prolong the seats and valve faces ,,,,as they tend to pit way earlier than inlet valves..

besides the slight advantage that k_freak mentions

hoping you pull that "gnarly shim" and take pics mate

good luck !!!

sad news k-bike ...i have read some of his articles ...

Ok, guys finally got my tools ground to fit! Smile No visible damage on the shim and the everything looks good on the lifter as well. Kind of a little mystery how the lobe got damaged? I was expecting some real visible damage on the shim. Can't read the number on the shim, but will take measurements and order my new ones.

That damage comes from bruising the metal after it has been hardened. It is very unlikely it was caused when the cam was in the engine but highly likely it happened because of rough handling at the factory or a dealer when the bike was a lot newer.
I have seen it many times before but most offen on tapered roller bearings. They get bruised when they are put in with a punch instead of a press. The punch comes of the shoulder of the outer race when hit and strikes the bearing surface causing a bruise which shows up as a bearing failure much later.
It actually happened to me with my F250 front wheel bearing and only showed up after 60 to 70 thousand k later. When I took the bearing off to repack it I found it and recalled damaging it a couple of years earlier.

great pics og ...i can see the face of the shim showing the discolouration i expected....but i thought there might be a slight ridge where the missing bit of lobe would be contacting it (or not contacting it)
but i see the leading edge of the cam lobe is in tact and i guess the trailing face is in reasonable nick too .....

good find on the exchange program ...that should make things easy mate .

nice result i would say

Hey Ungaas,

I'm just re-doing my insrument cluster/guages and going to a full LED conversion and the bulbs needed are 194's. They have a big selection and I went with the oval wide angle and the inverted lense.

Oval wide angle is on top and the inverted is below. I think the inverted is going to work better for giving that softer glow like the Oem incandescent bulbs, but we shall see.

i think you may be right og ....i have used some led replacements before ....and the ones i used were quite directional .....but i didnt see a vast improvement, i guess the light doesnt bounce around as much .

watching with interest .

i gotta come up with a solution for the fuel guage and temp guage ....they have tiny 2 watt globes and are quite hard to see at night (odd fitting on them also ...makes it hard to find a good replacement )

You read my mind Charlie. I haven't gotten my guages apart yet, but they are definitely going to need help. Is it a different bulb than the cluster?

thanks mate! take a look at the specs link on the 194 bulb page and it has light patterns and output as well. I'm thinking something a little higher rated than the inverted is going to be in order for the gauges. Keep me posted on what you do. Were they tricky to get out of the guages?

not really og ..there is a rubber tubular seal over the retainer which is a push fitt into the back of the guage (about 10mm). a 90 degree spade lug is the connection for the wiring imediatly behind the bulb retainer.

dont loose the piece of rubber ...as you will have a foggy meter after wards.

i have some heat shrink to replace my lost one , but im waiting to find a solution before going back in there again
