After a lay up for best part of a year, I bought (and installed) a new Odyssey battery.

Once fitted, I turned the ignition key and the fuel pump kicked in and the lights came on, on the dash. The headlights, indicators etc all worked, but on pressing the starter...nothing happened :pale:

There's no attempt from the starter motor, but no 'electrical' clicking whatsoever (no the kill switch wasn't on & I wasn't in gear - or sidestand down).

It was working fine last year

Any ideas?

Could it be the starter relay - and if so where is this located?

Thanks

Bonz

In the relay box, rear RHS.......check that you got ground and signal in at the small connector.

Permanent ground on the brown wire, 12V+ on the black/yellow wire when the button is pushed.

If no power, next place to check is the connector to the RHS switch assy under the tank.
(input to the starter button is a black/green wire).

Try pulling the clutch lever in while starting even if it is in neutral.

Well, it's good (if not baffling) news.

Equiped with a test meter and a few tools this morning I went into the garage to investigate. I thought before I got stuck in Id give her a try - lo & behold she fired up sweet as a sweet thing.

There's usually a reason for everything and it may one day come to bite me in the ass but Im not gonna worry about it now. Im just gonna ride it.

The ABS lights are still flashing despite a couple of re-sets, but that's another story. For now, the old girl breathes again Very Happy

Thanks for your suggestions folks.

My money is on earthing or battery. For what its worth on my car the ABS acted up if the battery was not good, ie low voltage etc.

Over the the years had a few brand new batteries that didn't work. Loose plate inside one did strange things.

Its possible for the clutch lever wiring to go erratic too so just check that one out.

If the instrument panel powers, the pump spins...then it could be the starter relay, starter...or?

One of my girls does this every now and then and there's "clicking" coming from the relay...does that mean I need to swap the relay?

Pump spins when button is pressed?.

You could have bad earth or bad battery or just simply a low battery, or starter brushes needing cleaning/replacing.

All easy, but don't keep trying it if you only get a click, it may weld the relay and destroy it though there are posts on repairing it.

Starter is easy to remove and the brushes are cheap, even from BMW.

Start with checking earths especially the one over the gear lever, on the gearbox casing.
Check the battery is good and enough cranking power. One on the Rover here failed a few weeks ago but still showed 12.6V so that's not a reliable test on its own. Swap with a known good battery?
Starter is easy to remove and clean. It slides back but needs wriggle but not too much as there is an o ring seal. Two allen bolts keep it in place.
Two long crosshead screws, but mark the casing before you open it up so that you put it back right.

Battery tested and is solid. The fuses too. I noticed the headlight and horn were also out and I saw on another post that's a tell it's the starter brushes. So I yanked it last night for cleaning.
