G.day All, Ready to fire up the beast but no luck. There is no power to fuse no 6 and therefore no power to the FI relay. There is power to all other fuses and power to the ignition switch. Any ideas will be most welcome. Cheers TomAnother K100 Joins the Shed Icon_evil

Fuse 6 gets power from the FI relay it doesn't supply power to it so it is the FI relay that is not operating. It gets power from fuse #1 and it supplies power from the red wire that is direct to the battery. The earth to the relay coil is what controls the relay and that comes from the ECU on a Yellow/brown wire at terminal 7 on the ECU and terminal 85 on the relay. That earth is only there when the engine is running and the hall sensor for 2-3 is sending signal or when you press the start button it gets earth for 1.5 seconds and will continue to send earth while the starter is cranking.
That earth is the common place to get problems and it is difficult to read it with a digital meter when cranking or just touching the start button.
First does the starter engage when you press the start button. can you hear the FI relay click when you press the start button.
Check the earths on the gearbox and under the tank because if that earth on the gearbox is faulty the ECU cant supply it to the FI relay.
If you want a full colour circuit PM me and I will give you a link to my drop box.
If you feel it is the ECU then I have a worker that I can bring to Guyra to lend or sell.

G'day Rick, thanks for that reply.Starter motor engages, fuel pump runs for about a second but I coul'nt hear the relay click.( Deafness aka old age is setting in). Earth is not the problem as an extra lead from the cluster under the tank has been run to the battery as well as an extra lead to the frame and gearbox with all connections nice and clean. Anyway tried to start the beast again and it started but ran as rough as. I suspect dirty plugs or bad HT connections to the plugs.
Thanks again Rick - will keep you posted. Some photos will be put up soon.
Cheers Tom

If the fuel pump runs and it spluttered to life briefly then the electrical part of the FI is working. Try new plugs and cleaned injectors check coils and leads for corrosion at plug points and HT leads where they join the plugs.

perhaps a bad relay too tom ? been known to happen

but best guess is that the starter brushes - comutator is in need of a clean ?

isn't hard to do and discount this as an issue ...in the great scheme of things

but perhaps under tank connections need a clean up tom ....get out the deoxit and do that connector that does the hall sensor connections ..(have found some that look like they are powder coated with dust once the connector is disengaged

good luck mate .... following your progress

We had something similar with a K75 at a friends workshop.

The connector to the computer unit under the seat was the problem. Opened it up and cleaned contacts and reattached and it was fine. Do both as Rick G has said, its simple and a no cost exercise that pays dividends. We cheated a bit by keeping the finger on the starter button for a moment after the engine started to fire and it was still getting fuel. Finger off it immediately died. As Rick G put it, this confirms the fuel injection is working.

I have tried to put it correctly, correct me if I am wrong. There are two earth connections, one for the starter which is only used for starting and which also powers the fuel pump for starting, and the second one for the fuel injection which keeps the engine running.

Tom , try swapping your horn relay to the FI relay for a brief test as this will get you going. they are almost identical, except for the double 87 pin . I have a spare ECU here if you need to check that. anything else that I could help out with? just ring.

I doubt it's the ECU as that's the one I've had in my bike for the past month or so. Working fine and returned it to Tom last week. I'd be going with Rick's suggestions... plugs, injectors and HT. They're easy to do and the most likely problem imo.

When I had the problem with my K100LT I swapped the unit up under the headstock and it solved the problem. I never bothered getting it tested because BMW wanted €75 to do that and I bought one off Motorworks for much less. I actually don't know if it was the unit or the multi pin connection although I did clean them all up to no avail.

The K75 it was the unit under the seat and was the multi pin connection.

As KH has said, plug, injectors, HT and back from there. But in my mind its something that affects all 4 cylinders equally so my take is that its more likely to be further back in the system than an individual plug, lead or coil.

Having had a car go down here last week due to a fuel pressure sensor/regulator [would turn over and splutter but not run] I am wondering could there be an issue with that or a connection to it?
