hi all to get a starter motor out of a k1100 with ABS which is the best one to get out of the road the abs unit or can you get it out by moving the coil pack out of the road ? any input would be greatly appreciated.

A K1100 with ABS would be the ABSII, I'd say.

In which case, getting the starter out ain't quite that simple Sad  The battery, ABS unit and the bracketry which holds all that "stuff" needs to be outta the way first. The starter motor comes out rearwards and CAN be a right bu66er to shift, initially. AMHIKT Razz

Good luck!!!

Approach it systematically and you'll be OK.

Once you have the battery, coils, overflow bottle and ABS unit out of the way, you'll be left with a frame attached to the footrest hangers. Be careful when you remove the battery tray, it's mounted on rubber-like gadgets which have a habit of separating.  Disconnect the hangers and unbolt the frame. It's a sort of "H" shaped thing with a double cross-bar.

You might be lucky and not have to actually remove the frame to get the starter out. The Starter itself is held by two bolts at the back, be sure to clean and re-attach the earth cable when you re-assemble!

The starter has an "O" ring in the nose and this can make it difficult to pull the starter. You might have to get a bit brutal with it.

While you're in there, you could take the opportunity to pull the alternator and have a check of the monkey nuts Laughing.

Use lots of copper grease or blue Loctite when you bolt everything back together again, just in case you ever need to go back in.

Enjoy affraid
