Took the old girl for a quick trip to Tamworth today. The bike ran fine but some odd electrical gremlins appear to have set up house in what I presume is probably the right hand handlebar switch. I noticed on my last ride that the electric start was being a bit erratic...and now today it has stopped working. Fortunately it'd easy enough to bump start. I also noticed the blinkers doing some odd stuff....like the right blinker light on the dash coming on when I pressed the left blinker switch...and after stopping for juice at Moonbi a delivery driver in a truck I had overtaken told me that when I was behind him, my headlight was blinking on and off.

I'm guessing all these things are related and are all in the right hand switchblock somewhere...that's the first thing I'll look at tomorrow, armed with some Deoxit etc, but was wondering if there was anything to look at either apart from or including this?

Sean.

The main ground goes through the starter, and if the brushes are dirty or worn, you will get this 'gremlin' issue. Pull the starter first, have a look at/clean the brushes...

Ok, thanks for that. I just pulled the starter motor off the spare motor to have a look at...so will compare them both and see what's what. Thanks.

Have a look at the starter brushes, if the fault is affecting the headlight then the brushes are probably to blame as the earth for the load shed relay is through the starter motor so that when the starter is energised the load shed relay has 12v+ at both terminals and releases giving max power to the starter.

A curious thing is that this problem seems to have coincided with replacing my main earth wire. Maybe I'd better have a look at that first, just to make sure......though I can't see what could go wrong there?

I have a similar type of problem.

Initially I had a non starting issue so I took out took out starter motor and stripped/cleaned etc and its fine, also changed starter relay, load shed relay and ICU under the headstock and checked and remade all the earths. The indicator problem remains and it only happpened after I did this work. It only happens sometimes. Horn also not working.

Olaf check fuse #7 and make sure it is OK. Check it with a meter and clean the terminals where it plugs in.

If all else fails, try checking for breaks in the wiring loom. These cause intermittant problems.

First find a sledge hammer and casually lean it against the wall opposite your bike. Twisted Evil

Try to isolate each wire you check. Measure the resistance of the connecting wires and with your third hand give them a wiggle at the same time. Squeeze any sharp bends in the wiring and tap likely-looking things.

Good luck Very Happy

Ok, so the starter motor is simple to remove. There are only 2 locating bolts. It moves. Why can't I get it out? More violence required? A special knack?
