Now there are only a couple of reasons this should look so ugly ...I am hoping its the easier option.

It seems like you got the engine oil in the wrong place.

It has that sort of Cappuccino look...thick and frothy....lekke mmmmm

Water/oil pump overhaul needed I`ll guess, and check the weep hole passage.

That aint ugly I thought you might have been looking in the mirror.
And oh boy are you gonna have fun cleaning the radiator out. I have had good success using some water soluable degreaser in the water and changing it a few times.
Also when it comes to refilling you can get the tank up and far enough to the left to get at the filler without removing the fuel lines, makes it easier.
How is the oil got any water in it?

Dishwashing liquid can also be used for this..................
use all of it, then you have a good excuse for not to do the dishes this evening.

Rinse through with plenty of clean water afterwards.

Have my morning fresh handy...lemon scented ...that should sort the radiator...and i have dumped the oil and filter...there was a half inch of water in the bottom of the sump.
Now to strip it all down and re seal it yippee....taking my time and may even get some new 515 master gasket as the old tube I have is way past its use by date.

Since you also got water in the oil, it points in the direction headgasket problem.............quite seldom on a K.

and or the presure of the hot water blowing back into the oil passages on stop but still hot inge ....well its an attempt to save klompy from pulling the head off straight away .... at least

do the repair klompy ...and then take a second look after a few ks i recon .

Yes...I would also first have overhauled the pump, then closely watched the expansion tank and the oil level eye closely on the trips afterwards.
As said headgaskets is seldom a problem on a K, but must be kept in mind as it also could be the reason.........

That is a mess.
I cannot imagine what you were thinking the first time you saw that.
If you need/ want a hand let me know.
Maybe between two of us we could know our heads together hard enough to get some results.
Do as Charlie said. Fix the pump, clean it and run it. Hopefully it is not the head.
Got mine back together last night and went for a ride.
Definately better than the run to Bingara, but maybe needs a balance. If only someone I know close by had a set of balance thingys

And check the rad seal, Klompy, mine swelled when it got contaminated with oil and restricted return flow from the reservoir tank.

Just a thought.

Don't use OMO in the radiator whilst it cleans great , smells good its a bugger to flush if it gets lumpy/clots in the radiator
get some engine flush to get rid of the water in the block and order a couple of new oil filters you'll need them
hopefully its only the pump good luck

thanks guys have the pumps back together and fitted....took the advice re ensuring surface flat and clean, put sealant on both surfaces till tacky and then bolted it together....have a place here called Buttsworth engineering and they provided all new allen head screws (stainless) for $7...now will wait till tomorrow to fill with oil and water, new oil filter already in position.
Am hoping that this will come good....would be disappointed if the head gasket has to be changed...but being the eternal optimist that would be another opportunity to pull her apart. notice I even painted the pump and front cover....thats going to last 5 minutes...

Klompy, great job with the paint work. Notice you went to the trouble of putting red pin stripes on it as well...nice.

You will be happy to know I peeled of the excess orange sealant after it had set so the decorative pinstriping is no more.....I have now taken the tank off...pretty easy although a tad messy given the almost full tank and sure enough there is the radiator cap...what a crap place to put it, would it have hurt to have it accessable with the tank fitted? Anyhow will fill this up with dishwashing liquid and water and try to work out how I can have the tank fitted, cap off and run water into the radiator to flush?...balancing the tank perhaps?

Would not be an issue if the elec connection and rubber plumbing were longer...may have to jury rig something. Also took the thermostat out ..wow was that unattractive...oh well hopefully the soapy detergent mixture will clean all the old oil out..and even more hopefully I will find that the head gasket is healthy.

If you use to much sealant in the area where the pressure relief valve return passage is,
you could get a problem with this passage getting blocked.

Then you would achieve a leak at this spot, ..........and you`re not the first one.

dont forget to take off the filler cap and clean up the valving through there .....btw you will probably find the expansion tank full of oil ( should that be creamed mayonaise )...and the level indicator tube really hard to see inside ...from memory about 4 inches of about 9mm id clear hose will fix the invisible water level .....but ... after you have it all cleaned up and running propper like eh?

Inge K I was thinking the same thing as just went through that part with the circlip ordeal on the aux drive, the first time I did this I blocked the hole and only noticed when I had to go back in the second time around.
Mr Klompy what a bummer but you really got in there and nailed it.

Discovered something interesting....ran, cleaned and bled the system ( took hours with tank precariously balanced to the left) had rad cap off watched the fluid flow when thermostat opened saw and heard the fan go on but my temp gauge did not move off cold?? so I earthed the wire out and it went off scale high,,,,so the gauge works ok perhaps the sender unit is kaput ( yet the fan came on but no high temp light????) I guess I have to buy a replacement sender unit...here is where it gets strange my ole sender has a circular post you clip the wire to but the replacements I have found have a twin pin connection...what is the go there???

HELP cause mine looks like this

The pictures from Motorworks/Motobins shows the sensor for the jetronic/fan/warning light, for the temp gauge it is a sensor like the one in your first picture.

its all smoke amd mirrors mate ...!

the temp sensor that your looking at is the temp guage only ....an indicator, an auxilary to function thingo only ....and after the cooling system , before it enters the motor propper.

the actual dual element temp sensor for engine management and fan function is located in the water stub ...straight off the engine housing behind the radiator and a little right of the throttle bodies ..(so perfectly likely that it would get over 100 deg c right there , before it enters the radiator etc and then the thermostat some where along the way a bit further )

beware of the threads and mating connections of this little blighter ....brass and aluminium dont co-exist well together....

but by the sounds of it, all is well so far. just make that connection to the sensor again ...clean up the electrical connections both between the bottom of the water pump and up through the wiring harness to the guage ...most recover ok .

Thanks Charlie...neglected to mention that sensor may have been treated inhumanely and not wrapped in cotton wool on removal......mmmmmm,,,may have dropped it a little bit....and found the right one....bloody thing never worked real well....dear mr moto bin/works .......

yeah seems doofus charlie put his blooming oil presure sensor and temp sensor (attached to water pump housing ) through the ultrasonic cleaner ...right royal leak from oil pump sensor after wards ( what was i thinking )

so another question from left field......does the red overheat light ever come on when it is not high temp.....i.e. how do you know it is going to work...other lights come on with ignition on but my oh does not....or is this all normal get back in your box klompy .....

oh you do have a way with words young Rossco...you pay my wages now and I want a pay rise to compensate for the cost of BMW parts.

Just give me a call , of course if the weather is really atrocious it will be perfect for maintenance in the "mancave"...I have the TV and fridge and a selection but not so good for riding to beautiful sunny Richmond.

Just as a point of info Mercedes Benz have a cooling system de-oiling detergent which is the go for cleaning out cooling systems that have had the oil emulsion in them.
