Ausbrick,
Fairing link was only a guide,
I bought the fairing of good old e-bay for $65 inc postage..
You just have to keep an eye out for these things, the only trouble is that you sometimes buy things on a whim then when they arrive you think ''why did I buy this?''
Your k1100, wheels look the part, the front tyre looks to me to be wider than the standard 100-90-18 on my k100, are they the right size for the 1100's.
You need to fill in the gap at the rear of you seat to make the lines smoother, other than that I like it, the front looks pretty mean, In a good way.

I think they're K1200RS or R1150 wheels.bushyintas wrote:Your k1100, wheels look the part, the front tyre looks to me to be wider than the standard 100-90-18 on my k100, are they the right size for the 1100's.
I see that the wheel-mounted rear disc is carried over as is the rear caliper and the front requires the calipers to be mounted on an adaptor of some kind.
I'm interested because I like that wheel pattern and fancy doing something similar to my "K1100R" project (one day when finance permits).

Hey guys , The rear section has been fibre glassed and moulded into one and is ready for painting. the wheels are off an r 1150 and front is a 130-17tyre, got them on fleabay .The front brakes required a plate to be made for the caliper to use the bigger discs and well worth as it pulls up real hard also had to change the bearings as they have different axle dia and machine up new spacers to suit the forks .Rear disc has now been changed back to the standard k as the rear wheel had to be offset too far to make the 1150 fit ,pity as it braked really well and didn't over heat like the k set up if you give it a long hard workout . The rear r1150 wheel has an greater offset than the k1200 wheel but has the lugs on it to mount the disc, they do not clear the k caliper . I have now machined these off and it works with the k disc setup well .I would go with a k1200 rear wheel[ less messing around ]and the offset is less .I run one on my other k1100 tourer with a 170 tyre it misses the swingarm by 3-4 mm but has never caused any problems, thought it might rub but its wide low profile does not seem to flex at all , they usually run a 160 that would help. All in all its a hoot to ride and cost very little to string together . don't forget this is a k1100 with para rear end these mods are not as easily suited to k100.Cheers A B

I went to take her for a run today, low battery, I know I should have charged it before trying to start,
thought it might just kick, but no..... welded the contacts on starter relay..... BUGGER !
I will pull apart and see if relay can be salvaged.
The advice is plainly here on this forum,
but the weather was nice and clear, the temptation large, patience at the time nil, just wanted to
ride, final outcome, no ride, more work and expense. I guess I'm not the first and definitely not the last
it's like ''just tighten that nut a little more", you all know how that story ends.

Some of the Kawasakis have a soleniod type relay which is far less prone to welding shut and would fit into the same space.
The relay on the K75 welded a couple of times and I just dressed the contacts and all is still good, it's worth a try.

All fixed ,
turned out to be the load shed relay
not the starter relay as thought.
Just waiting for some warmer drier weather so the final paint can be applied.

Snowbeard,
the mount for the instrument cluster is a flat plate mounted on rubber mounts similar to the ones for the battery tray, using the existing threaded holes on the tripple tree. then an angled bracket manufactured to suit the bottom of the cluster rectangular hole for the plug set up and bent to desired angle approx 120*. bolt the cluster to the desired height onto the flat plate.
I'll post a photo when the weather clears.

I recon you could,
I needed to attach a head light mount low along with the fairing, so this was the easiest way.

Nah that's the '84 seat with the center cut out and re joined wit a mig, lucky it was a metal base, plastic doesn't like my welder, I've melted things then said''should have taken that off before I...''. Oh well.
thanks xpc316e and all the comments received, all good fun,
hope to SI (special interest) register in October when it turns 30 yrs, cheaper rego, can ride 52 times a year, only draw back is you have to keep a log book.

I think its aprox half, no limit on Km, just times as in days, you can have 52 individual ride days or take the 52 all in one hit, not limited to state can travel anywhere.
Only SI this one as already have 88 RT on full rego.

Further development on the project....
Installed an aftermarket gear display in the instrument cluster. It replaces the worn out LCD display with a 13mm Led 7 segment display, it fits with a bit of tweaking after you remove the original gear display and circuit board.
The whole wiring loom of this display threads out through a grommet hole drilled into the base if the instrument cluster and the attached via a plug to the rest of the circuit that I made up on a ''breadboard'' using 12 volt mini relays, Turning the three wire input from the gear selector mechanism on the rear of the gearbox to a six wire output for the LED display and one output for connection (positive +) to the starter circuit so I can start the engine without squeezing the clutch lever.
Relay Type as pictured
HY4100F-DC12V Mini Electronic Power Relay DC 12V 6 Pin 6Pin 1Ω 1A
I will keep you posted all works ok so far, more photos when finally installed.

I now have a fault to fix with my speedo, I have looked at all the threads dealing with this but none match my fault.
Speedo works fine for the first few K's but then climbs 20 to 30 Km/h higher on the dial until you slow down then the cycle starts again.
I have pulled the cluster apart, detox all electrics, twisted pins etc, etc but still no change. All calibrated well on Karamba, all I can now think of is a fault in the final
drive, dirt on slotted disc ?, possibly foaming gear oil ?
Thoughts please anyone.
This fault was there before I fitted the gear indicator so I think its unrelated.

There could be some foreign object in the magnetic drive for the needle within the instrument cluster. I have seen this in cable driven speedos that were suffering similar problems.
I doubt that anything would be wrong in the final drive as anything there would tend to mask pulses and slow the speedo down

just noticed the instruments bushy ...they appear to be the early series 84-85 (with the 7 and 4 litre indicators )
on some of the early ones I have seen the meters do seem to ...erm... over indicate ..time to time
im sure there was some change in the electronic components in the design of both the speedo drive and tacho
just thinking aloud here ...
I would change the electrolytic capacitors on both boards first off
change them out for the same value as marked .....I would think that after 30 odd years they would have dried out and be far less compliant doing the job that they need to do
just a thought
