...FWIW...when mine is cold, makes thumps and bumps sounding almost like piston slap in a worn out 2 stroke. Like something banging around where it should not be. Was kinda alarmed. Read something in some forum newbie section about that...forgot where. Well anyway, when ridden, goes away in my case.

Thanks Tintock and Bert 2.0 yes tomorrow is rode worthy day at 11 am, I purchased from Vic Roads the temp certificate to use and took the bike for the first ride today Very Happy great to ride rock steady over 60km etc but felt abit less than inspiring at very low speeds as I am not used to the weight with all my Jap bikes being 180kg etc but I imagine it's something you get used to pretty quickly. The K engine felt very strong (lots of torque) and as said rock steady at pace, all good.

My first ride was up the bloody path from were I have been working on the bike inwhich after riding on it requires attention.
Trust me it's worse than it looks in the picture

Must be a great feeling to get the bike out on the road after these long months preparing it. Aye, it's a heavy beast, but you're right when you say you'll get used to it at slower speeds very quickly.

How does the seat feel on the road? Did the padding turn out to be spot on? That's the only drawback about the '84 RTs - the original seat's a bit of a board! Smile

Tintock this is the 86 K100RS I just purchased on friday still got a fair bit of work to do on the 84K100RS which I know is abit confusing since this is the thread for my 84 bike, yes the seat on both bikes concern me for long trips with others comments about the plank feel but I will see.

The 86RS made her first trip to work this morning and I have claimed the spot (my spot stay away others:twisted:) the road worthy is at 11:00am

Halo,

Your renovation as well as your posts are outstanding.

What an inspirational and educational post.

Hope you'll enjoy you k100 for many years. (Don't try to sell it on Fleabay as people will go wild and offers will go crazy.)

Most of us look like amateurs if we compare our achievement to yours.

Halo you have cracked the 400 posts barrier and your bike gets Vic Rego ( enter party here)....whats the number on the plate is it an exotic personalised plate to suit the commitment you have made?

I have had many bikes and spoke %^&t in lots of forums but this really is a positive place which does motivate to do your best...onya for jumping on and putting your two bobs worth in...I for one am motivated by yours and others efforts...its like a perpetual challenge man/girl against bike....and have you noticed it doesn't matter whether you are Aussie, American, Canadian, Kiwi, Brit, Irish or European all seem to have the same vibe...now thats unusual.

Three cheers for the K.cheers and all that worship her.

Excellent Halo. Good timing too. You will have a few months to save up between registering 2 bikes.
Which one will you chose?
One white and blue every day bike and one you keep for best? Like the pants you were not allowed to wear after sunday school in case you got them dirty.
I am happy you at least now get to know the bikes. It may give you a few clues in deciding how you finish 'the beauty' off.
And we know where you live. Always wanted to join the zorst club. :suspect:

Thanks Alby, Tintock and Charlie, Tintock I'm just glad you comment and put your views in Smile . Yes finished with the 86RS now I went to Vic Roads and thought I could just drop in without a booking and found out the first inspection they had was in 10 days Shocked wasn't going to let that stop me (please sir) since i was on a role with the road worthy & getting her up and running quickly etc so luckily for me they had a cancellation at Oakleigh so in I went and by 4:30 pm I had plates (plate) they issued it abit scratchy though Rolling Eyes .

That's a handy parking spot you have got in work... The set up we have got is private car's get parked in the main car park... Company cars get parked facing our office complex.... my motorbike gets parked outside the back door! When it rains if I can be arsed I can put it into the loading bay.... not done that yet mind as I know when I return to it someone would have raised the scissor lift and parked it next to the air con units!

Looks like a bike cover job Twincarb if it's any consollation I when I get home she is outside at my house as my little shed is full for now with the other bike in pieces (big garage on my spare block next door to come Very Happy).

Two issues with the bike so far

The speedo on the dash is intermittent is this the sender or the dash internals usually ?

Same for the Fuel gauge (at least this has one my 84 doesn't)

Also as Alby said road trip how many Melbourne Members do we have ?. I live in the mountain ranges in the dandenongs a place that is great for pubs/eating/riding my place can be a meeting place for the start and end of a road trip any takers !. (It is close to Xmas though now)

I would first clean the contacts at the back of the dash and see if that helps it out at all... If there is no joy there I would borrow the sender from the '84 as that would assist in working out which end is playing up... It could also be corrosion in the dash causing it as well.
My gear indicator doesn't work I had it apart and found the electrics for it are shot! Sad so a minor job for me....

Love the sound of your tickover I wish that mine was so quiet... I am idling around 1500 rpm at the moment... am bidding on a gastester on eBay at the moment so hope to be able to check the idle air mix that and I still need to check the throttle bodies are balanced... was going to be a job today but got distracted with work! I am hoping to be able to check it out tomorrow lunchtime mind.

Just turn up to a gathering and put your bike in line Halo.
Just don't buy the tinkerers too many beers before they get to your bike.
Even a bike running like a pig with more air leaks than the Hindenburg can make a 1500km trip.

halo try cleaning the contacts under the right hand side cover ...the speedo sensor connects to the main loom just there ....and the tank connector is also there ...we often find these little connectors need some deoxit ...note the tank connector socket ...often gets distorted durring "tank off" times and fogot to unplug events ...

just a heads up

I was at the local motor cycle clothing clearence center yesterday and picked up a top box (not BMW) for $129, cheap in my mind. Upon inspection at home I noticed the top reflector was a module and looked like there was more to it than met the eye, so as a creative mind does I had to investigate.

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2412

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2413

I happened to have a light strip left over from my shed led lights which almost matched the pitch of the leds required for the non used light reflector in the RJays box, however one could use just descrete LEDS (just is a bit more messy).

Each white LED has a forward drop of around 4 volts therefore I have two banks of two Leds (power to ground) which leave 12-(4x2) per bank thus for 20mA to flow we need a resistor of 6/20mA= 300 Ohms the resistor dissapation will be I2R = 20mA squared x 300 Ohms which equals .12 watts inwhich a standadr leaded resistor can handle .25watts, so all good..

(All just from V=IR & P=I2R)

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2414

As you can see from mine all I had to do was link up the LEDS that I cut off that wern't needed to match up with the holes in the reflector

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2415

Now to connect up to 12V for a test run

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2416

Now the module with the LEDS integrated (just cut down the PCB)

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2510

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2512

My 84 K100 RS restoration - Page 14 Img_2513

Now with the module integrated back into the top box, a quick release connector for the top box to Bike to be installed next and wired to the K100 Parkers (Just what I need fo for the Queensland trip next year Very Happy)

Is that the fuel level 'light' issue? If so, my '85 RS had the same issue. MY 'low fuel warning' was the stock 'engine miss' caused by 'no gas anymore' until I replaced the sender unit in the tank. Check your bulbs first, make sure they are not blown, but I'll bet it's the sender...

there have been some writeups of the 84 senders before halo ....well the theory part at least . there maybe some folks that have rebuilt with success...
not sure .
its a tricky little critter, that one .
sorry my previous advice on the tank connector was cockeyed, was thinking the later series with the tank connector at the back not the front . but still worth investigating .

I have just spent the last coupla hours enthralled by your resto.
What an outstanding job. Two things impress me, your dedication and hard work and the fantastic photos which provide a visual resource that will help so many K freaks like myself.
I first climbed aboard my K in April this year and have been grinning ever since,
restoration (my girl needs one).....maybe next year.
thanks Halo!

I replaced my low fuel sender unit in my 1983 naked last year. It is not rebuildable...chuck away. To find a used unit was a difficult job...not many about at all. Remember to change the small gasket between the tank and unit. It is cheaper and safer to get one from a hydraulic repair place which will cope with the fuel. A little o ring cost me nothing.
I used my trip meter on a pushie computer as a "low fuel" warning. Good luck.

AND.... Do NOT over-tight the plastic nut. Mine was broken when I bought the bike and gas was leaking.
Install it finger tight then turn it maybe 1/4 turn with a wrench.

Great thoughts guys thanks for the advice dowdytom cheers and it's good to see someone in melbourne there must be four of us now ? thats a ride day for sure, can't let the blokes up north have all the fun by themselves Very Happy.

So I have two tasks 1) Try to rebuild the 84RS one which I believe is just low level switch ? 2) Try to rebuild the 86RS unit which is playing up Hmmmm sounds like a weekend effort.

Halo,

AFAIK, the sensors work on the temperature difference between the fuel and the air space above the fuel, so I don't think there are any 'moving' parts that can be fixed.

But good luck with the fix. Let us know if you discover a way.

Paul.

About the level gauge/sensor on the -86, check the four pole tank connector...as it is a known problem...yellow wire is for the gauge.

Also measure the resistance between the yellow and the brown (ground) wire.....you should measure ~3,5 ohm at full tank, and ~110 ohm at empty tank.

At the instrument you should measure ~210 ohm between the yellow (G) and brown (-) wire, and ~125 ohm between the yellow (G) and green/black (+) wire.

Halo, since we live in a digital age, consider using a digital fuel gauge. Open cap, stick digit in, look, feel, look in tank....gauge how much fuel you have.

Well works been busy but back to the bikes so the 86RS is getting a after market ECU (mega squirt) suggested by Inge K with K1100 TB's and I want to get rid of the TFM and go with the after market ECU sensors thinking airflow temp probe and C02 etc plus then I have a chance to control a turbo etc(next year first quarter) and the 84RS is getting the fairings / tank done by me so I purchased a decent palm sander (fantastic) and a very decent filter so I can do two pack, the digital pressure gauge/ regulator from supercheap was only $24. So tommorrow it's two pack undercoat on the tank.

If you need info on the megasquirt for a brick there is a guy wmax351 on the Motobrick.com site that is in the process of putting one on a K75. he is a fairly clever young fella only too keen to help others. I have been following his progress and am thinking of putting it on the K1100GS when I start on it.

With the sort of changes that can be done with Megasquirt the K100 would be capable of much more than it now produces.
From a few articles I have read the K1100 is quite capable of puting out 140hp at the crank and then using 1200 cams and throttle bodies as well there is huge potential without any of real big mods that cause disasters that go bang in the middle of the highway.

Yes guys l agree there is so much more these engines can give. Inge K says the 2V is an ideal candidate as the 2V head has greater cooling and the 3 core radiator etc, some of these ECU's can also be used in piggy back mode first. It's just begging to be done.
