The shield that is located below the gear shifter on a K1100- possible bolt on to K100. Anyone tried it?

I just checked and it does appear to be an option. On my 87 RS there is a a blanked hole on the head for the front bracket and the rear one fits to one of the gearbox bolts. I was able to place the shield above the pipes but did not fit it. I can share pictures if you want.

Please do as I cannot visualize the following, "I was able to place the shield above the pipes but did not fit it."  :-)

The 4V K100/K1100 exhaust manifold pipes' curvaceous design seems to create a wider space between the outside edge of the pipe assembly and the transmission. The shield fits within that space. The 2V's relative straight pipe layout doesn't create that extra space. Grinding the outside of the shield could be an option.

Of course, this apogee of deductive reasoning took place while gazing at two-dimensional Brick photos in a pre-coffee environment—a condition that will now be corrected. Smile

I do have in my tool kit the National Songbird of Southeast Asia, an angle grinder, so I just might get caffeinated and give it a whirl.

I am very much post coffee so gave it a try. It fits !. I did not remove the gearbox bolt as I need more than coffee to do that,  but it lines up perfectly and clears the pipes. The shield is off a K1100RS that I am working on otherwise it might be a permanent fixture. This is fitted to a 87 RS

With the addition of a wire retaining device, it looks like it would be a great place for warming burritos in transit. cheers

Super Mexicano "Exhaust Mod" Numero Uno- muchas gracias por los fotos mi amigo!

So if you add a newer model's part is it a "downgrade" or "retrograde"?

You need a K1100 shift lever too. (Will bolt right up.)

The K75/K100 shift lever is straight. As you can see in the pics above the K1100 shift lever has bends in it so that it clears the heat shield.

It fits but you also need the K1100 gear lever, the 2v gear lever does not fit around it.

Thanks to Two Wheels Better for correcting my BMW part number. And thanks to duck and

Olaf for elaborating on how to fit the heat shield by changing the gear lever for a K 1100 one. I will be looking out for a cheap second hand one,  K-pox is still active. This modification would definitely help in Spain's Almeria region at present it's 36 and still going up. Have made my K rideable by fitting a tank bag and removing the lower fairing, but always looking for ways of deflecting heat. Big thanks to the k community.

I had issues last September in 35c plus in Spain caused by the tank bag preventing the petrol from cooling. I had to take it off as the petrol was getting to boiling and vapourising and it got worse as the fuel level dropped.

Just so you know the heat shield has one mouning on a bell housing bolt.....possibly obstructed by the exhaust.

The paint of those K1100 heat shields can get nicked so I had a few of them ceramic coated when I took some other parts in for coating. Lower right in this pic:

Thanks 92KK 84WW Olaf for the extra input, certainly different temperatures here to Ireland. When I first got the K about four years ago I certainly was suffering of burns to my inner thighs making the bike unrideable in summer here, had  to buy and refit all the heat control  parts that previous owners had removed I know exactly what you mean about fuel tank, Touch wood since fitting the tank bag which has knee padding I no longer suffer from excessive heat on the inner thigh, mind you the tank bag I bought came off a smaller later K with smaller tank, mine obviously a 22 L one which means the tank isn't totally covered so haven't suffered from petrol boiling,  in saying that it must be really close. The heat shield I purchased doesn't have any brackets so will be making brackets to different anchor points which are more accessible. Summer jackets a must.here.

Duck nice job with the ceramic coating. Can they do inner thighs, just joking.

Of all of the Ks I've owned the worst for thigh burn is the K1100LT. I put an extra double layer of insulation under the tank and insulated the fuel return line which helps but it can still get hot.

What really helps: Quite by accident I bought some riding pants that have foam armor over the shin, knee and thigh. The thigh armor wraps around the inner thigh and that shields my thighs from heat more than anything else that I've done.

Down Under, Charlie and others use external fuel coolers, made from small transmission-type oil coolers, on additional length fuel hoses. These work very well, along with heat insulation panels under the tank, from their reports and threads made here on the forum. I must do a search.

I didn't find it (fuel heat) too much of an issue in my years of riding the '87 K100RS while touring or commuting in OZ. Of course, the tank was insulated and riding trousers sturdy. I can see how RT & LT models would exacerbate the issue.

I used to have vaporisation problems on hot days in slow moving traffic. I'd already fitted under tank insulation, side cover insulation and insulated the hoses. I cured it by insolating the fuel rail from the engine.   https://www.k100-forum.com/t14096p50-overheating-fuel-solution-mk1-new-improved-mk2#201125
I've been running the Mk2 heat shield for 4 years and the tank is a lot cooler and no vaporisation. The only problem is that it will only work with exposed fuel rails.
Regards Martin.

I was on my 84 K100 Sprint fairing and it had the BMW tank bag which does not cover too much of the tank but it was enough to cause issues and vapour locking the fuel. The Sprint fairing allows a lot more air around everything than the RT/LT or RS fairings and I still had issues. Removing the tank bag made a big difference and I was lucky and able to put it inside the trailer.

I was working on it last night for a trip to France/Spain in September having just done the water/oil pump and I am going to swap over injectors and injector rail, I have a nice refurbed and repainted one to hand but going to fit insulation to it.

My take after so many visits to France on various Ks including the K1100, they don't like anything above 35C.
