hey Charlie you mentioned stainless, I have an exhaust on the way, what would you recommend to polish it or any tricks so make it gleem,

get one of those metal polishing kits from "bunnings" gary the ones with the cloth and fiberous disks  about 100 mm in diameter ...quite cheap too ...comes with the right polish mediums as well ...but brasso works well  followed by other metal polishes

to get most of the gunk off .....wd40 and a stainless dish scrubber to start with

Gary,  I'm in the process of polishing my stainless exhaust as well.  I found lots of information about polishing stainless steel on the Casswell site.  One particular post had links to Youtube videos showing the process.  

The general recommendation is to start with polishing using a Sissal wheel with Black compound.  If that still shows scratches in the finish, begin to sand using successively courser grits of sand paper, starting at 800-1000, until you find the grit that begins to remove the scratches.  

On the other hand, if the Sissal wheel begins to get you to your goal, then move to a spiral sewn wheel using Green compound, followed by a loose wheel with the same Green, for colour. This technique will save time over starting at a coarse grit and working towards finer grits.  Sanding stainless, especially by hand, is A LOT OF WORK; it's not like polishing aluminum.

Thanks Robmack, this forum has a wealth of info, and some top blokes, I am so glad I went to the Karua rally, the bike must be loving all this attention, I am enjoying my bike more than I have in 16 years of owning it, when I bought it all the mates were riding Jap bikes,, I felt like an outcast, I now feel  partof the K family,

Gawd Inge!  If you have THAT much head on a pour of XXXBourg and of THAT consistency, it must have just come out of the sump from your K100RS after a run over the Hardangervidda (Mmmm, 78 degrees.  Lovely)!

at the output shaft now .....rivetts seem ok ...but the cussions in the absorber have shrunk and are sloppy ......this could be a show stopper ..as i dont have any newies on hand .... there are old spares around, ill see what we can do with them ..to make the best of whats available .

Well I never, shrunken rubber nuts!, off the mark alittle i know but if you had a puchbike tube handy that you can cut and fit over the rubbers you can get an idea of how much fill you will need. Not that the bike tube would last long in there it just gives you an idea how much meat is needed to fill the void. Apart from calling chris in Stafford, I cant think of a thing to replace it with before tuesdays phone about

think we found a solution ...although i have to say may not be permanent

by reorienting the rubbers we have a tighter fit ....
rivetts were loose ..about 2 mm moovement so far ...guess i got lucky on that one ....a modified absorber cage has been fitted with bolts as the fixing mechanism from the steel to the aliminium basket , additionally the teeth on the secondary gear (input for thr output shaft mechanism ) were worn thinner than many of the replacements we had on hand .....does this rattle also contribute to abnormal wear of the primary output drive gears as well ???

i guess well see in time ..


but for now all that stuff is back inside the engine and mostly sealed up ...to the clutch plate centering stage .



more tommorrow ...should have her running again ...although unknown prediction of noises to wait .

I cant see why it wouldn't charlie, as the rubbers harden and wear down they are setting up a knocking effect. I wonder whick comes first the hardening of the rubbers or the elongation of the rivets?? good job you can reverse them rubbers. i wonder just when we should be replaceing them as part of a longevity care thing.

Do you mean the idler gear, Charlie?......and if was it teeths that were worn or
the gear itself that was thinner?

should have said counter gear inge ....the one that drives the  output basket off the crank gear ...sorry for the poor wording ...bit late and tired out here ..( still fiting up the oilpump and intake rubbers etc ...while the drie bond goes off .. ready for the next stage tommorrow )

Don't forget to place 3 chocolate Easter eggs into all wear places...that way there will be less noises generated and you get a new smell to consider. I have used the engine of a tractor to warm up cans of spaghetti for lunch whilst ploughing.......you get interesting smells when the cans explode.

Let Easter Bunny place the eggs..........and keep those ears away from the gears.

How long have you had Gerty for Charlie?

Reading this last page makes me glad I bought new cush rubbers for the output shaft. The ones in all my shafts were shagged. The shaft bit and the geared bit would just slide apart easy as anything. The brand new rubbers were soooo much tighter. Even with heaps of lube I had to press the 2 halves back together again with the new rubbers fitted.
