Coincidentally, Pegasus' post comes just when I come back to a bit of forum activity after being detained at the ABS building in Canberra for many months.

There's been some thought given, and some basic ideas are in mind.

  • March 2022. Specifics to be worked out. Since Scotty from Marketing has said the Budget will be presented in late March, that makes May the most likely time for the federal election. Since I usually do 2 to 4 weeks' election work, a March election would be a pain in the butt. (That also assumes Scotty is telling the truth, which is sadly not guaranteed.)
  • Accommodation - probably a succession of country pubs as happened for smithy's northern ride. While historically smithy's northern and my southern rides were camping based, we all seem to be getting older and softer and camping is not as attractive. Or it may be that staying in pubs means the beer and food is easier . . .
  • Route to be determined. There has been some speculation and suggestion that Victoria might be part of the route. Hopefully  by that stage Dan will not be locking us out, or for us NSW people, letting us in and then not letting us out . . .   Don't know which Greek letter past Omicron we'll be up to then. (Apparently the Greeks are on notice that they need to add some new letters to their existing 24.)

Will do some planning and possibly reconnoitring before too much longer, but we can't rush these things.

Further information as planning happens. Suggestions welcome.

Bill

Good to see you back Bill. Looking forward to this ride and the pub stay idea I reckon is a good one. The advantages are :- less stuff to carry, everything you need under one roof i.e. feed, beer and bed, pack up a lot easier. Bring it on.
Cheers Tom

Good to hear Bill. Not sure what I'll be up to in March but I'll be there if I can. Pubs/camping either way I'm happy.
Great to catch up with you and all the others on the NT run the other week.
Cheers Nigel

Good to hear, Bill.  Same as Nigel with camping or pubs as we are both still young pups.

Meanwhile up in the penal colony we are still taking baby steps as we deal with this thing called covid.  I would like to think that the Karuah River Rally is on and that we will be able to participate again.

Fingers crossed but I will not hold my breath.  Same for the southern ride.

Big brother Uli, whose turn is it for the rum?  Beenleigh have had some Rum Club annual releases in recent years.  It may be time to open one of those.

I'm IN!!  Keen on Tallangatta...Mitta...Omeo...Mt Hotham...back to Tallangatta. Just Thoughts! Camping is definitely out of the question for me, even have great difficulty getting out of a bed, let alone a bloody tent!

I do believe that it's my shout with the rum. Will make further investigations as the time draws near. It does stave off the dreaded scurvy, doesn't it?

Ulli.

I'd be in that and include a trip up Mt Buffalo.
As for Rum and scurvy been drinking it all my life and not a sign of scurvy. Bundy rum may not be the best but mix it with Bundy ginger beer and if mothers milk was that good the rest of my family would have starved to death.

To keep scurvy at bay, I heard that sauerkraut is the perfect deterrent.. Don't know how well it goes with Bundy rum though.

For those who like to plan ahead in detail, date for the Southern Ride will likely be 19-20 March, with a long odds alternative of 5-6 March.

Rickmeister's suggestion looks like the basis of a good plan. I'll have a look at suitable accommodation, with our recent criteria (mostly) of down-at-heel and dodgy being top of mind. Wink

Spoke to someone from the electoral commission today. No one knows for sure until it’s official, but they think 5 March is the likely election date. Government statements  about the budget presentation date (24 March) may well be a distractor.

If so, that will work well for me with the southern ride.

If not, we see what happens.

That probably explains the email I got from them on Thursday requesting that I update my details. I run a pre-poll booth the week before as well as a polling booth on election day.
The money will pay for the trip! My K1100RS isn't getting much use these days as I bought a G650X Challenge 12 months ago. With the borders closed and all the Covid hype, long distance travel just hasn't been happening for me.

I got the same email, though I’ve already been engaged as a trainer of senior polling place staff, and told I’ll be an Early Voting Liaison Officer as well as running a polling place on Election Day. Whenever that is.

I think it’s overdue for our federal parliament to have fixed terms, rather than the prime minister of either persuasion choosing the election date purely on which date gives them the best chance of staying in office.

Other than that, seeing the way elections happen in many parts of the world makes me proud to participate in running elections here, where among other things a condition of being employed in the election process is that you have no involvement in a party or with a candidate.

Have you worked out a route yet? Where will we be meeting up?
Id like to try and arrange to meet up with either Rick, Charley or Smithy on the way down.
Hopefully without the torrential thunderstorm that Craig and I rode through between Scone & Merriwa (and my flat rear tyre at Scone) last time.
I would love for the route to include parts of Victoria as I have never riden down there.
I enjoyed stopping at the dog at Gundagai on the last ride. Again, as a banana bender, I hadn't been there before.
But the main reason I am asking about the route is that as it is so far from home, I want to plan my route home and check out the accommodation available.
Again, hopefully on roads not previously travelled.
I'd like to include the NSW south coast on the way home if I can.

Cheers,

Andrew

Short of catastrophic circumstances, ride confirmed for 19-20 March. Route to be confirmed in detail by the end of the month, but broadly following Rickmeister's suggestion earlier. Friday 18 meetup somewhere on the border region, + or - not too much, thinking of somewhere between Corryong and Tallangatta. Hopefully that will be enough to allow planners of short cuts and long cuts to be in that vicinity by Friday 18th evening. Depend on what I can find in accommodation.

To that end, can you give me an indication of likely attendance please? Not asking for ironclad, but only chime in if there is intent and good likelihood of being able to follow through. Helps to know how many I need to book for.

Planning a recce in the week after 12 Feb, as I am working for the election to replace Pork Barilaro in the NSW state seat of Monaro at the moment.

Any local knowledge and recommendations welcome. Forum post or PM.

Could be lonely at Jindabyne .  Wink

As above, first night (Fri) plan is near the border. Recent ride accommodation has been mainly country pubs. Variable quality overall, but the "interesting" ones make for talking points and stories.

Saturday heading into the Victorian high country. Overnight TBA.

Hopefully some good news will come tomorrow.

Hi All, at this stage I am hopeful of coming down to this year's southern run but cannot confirm at this time. Lots happening in life outside of my motorcycling interest.

If I were to go down I reckon Young would be a likely overnight stop on the Thursday evening which could entail a couple of coldies with a very long term member who now calls the place home. This would make a pleasant not too tiring run on the Friday down to northern Victoria to meet up with others.

Hope I get there.

Cheers

Had thought of staying at Walwa just near Jingellic.
Turns out the C545 down to Omeo has about 65km of dirt road. Much of it is quite rocky, though otherwise doable with care. I wouldn’t call it a fun road, though serious GS riders might. Not recommended, having 4 wheeled it yesterday.
Going across to Tallangatta, down through Mitta Mitta, turning towards Mt Beauty at Glen Valley rather than go on to Omeo and turn back makes it a 6 ¼ hr ride, 7 ½ if we take in Omeo.
How long a Saturday ride is ok or too much? Daylight Saving will still be on.
What say ye?

Bill

Sounds like a plan. I believe there is a pub at Walwa. If we go "clockwise", Walwa down via Guy's Forest, right onto Murray Valley Way, left down to Mitta Mitta, then right up the hill to Falls Creek, Mt Beauty, Tallangatta, left to Granya and thence back to Walwa. The Granya road is magnificent!!

I must admit I've done that loop a couple of times over the years, but have only been Omeo, Dinner Plain, Mt Hotham, Bright...only the once, on the way back from Philip island.

But, getting long in the tooth, the extra hour might be a bit too much for me, but happy to see how it goes, Also, I had my left hand carpal surgery with cortisone injection on Monday. Bit disappointed with the outcome, but it's only been a couple of days. Hopefully it will get back to normal soon.

That 65Km of rocky dirt road....nah!! Those days are also finished for me.

Walwa is a nice little place. You can get a good breakfast at the general store in the main street and as Ulli says, there also happens to be a pub there; the Stevenage. Plenty of good countryside and also plenty of nice dirt roads leading off into the hills and eventually back to Wagga etc. Bella and I did the Omeo on the old K bike a few years ago and it wasn't too bad. As Bill says, about 65km of dirt and plenty of opportunity to get sideways for those inclined as the road is reasonably twisty. In the old days the Omeo was a bit of a must do just so you could say you'd done it... as it was all dirt back then. Realistically though, most of it is heavily wooded and not the most sweeping, spectacular vistas you will ever find. However... there IS that pub along the way... Anglers Rest I think. Just sayin'.

Tintaldra is another nice place to stop over, with a cosy pub right near the Murray on the border. They serve meals and there is some provision to throw a tent up etc both at the pub and on the river across the road. Nice riding from most directions to get there. Not sure how many rooms the pub has. The pub at Jingellic seems to have become quite trendy and busy with daytrippers from Wagga etc.

I am planning on tagging along but not dead certain at this stage and it would have to be on a non BMW this time.

I reckon it would be great to see Sidecar Saxon on that non-BMW if it’s what I think it is. It would make a very special trip out of this year’s run.
Go for it mate & I hope I get down to see you there.

Cheers

Pub at Walwa is booked for Friday and Saturday nights. 6 rooms should cover us, hopefully.

Putting together various comments and communications, the current attendance list is:
Bill
Tom
Rick G
Warren C
Paul  hopeful
Garry
Andrew
Ulli hopeful
RT
Smithy
Nigel
TacKler
Seanii

There are some in there who have expressed a serious wish to come, but may not necessarily be able to in the end. Situation normal. Very Happy  Such is life.

I understand that a month out, it may not be possible to be sure, but if you could send me a pm or make a post when you do know, either way, whether you will be able to come that would help. (Except for those who have let me know definitely in recent weeks, of course.)

The pub at Walwa has pub meals for the nights we’ll be there, and a continental breakfast is included.

Drove some of the roads today. Should be an enjoyable ride.

Bill

Sounds great Bill and thanks for the time and effort you've put into organising this one. Looking forward to another ride and catching up.
Not too sure about any lengthy dirt roads especially if they're rough or rocky. Can you confirm.
I'm ok with 6-7 hours for the day but happy to fit in with what ever you organise.
Will be touring out that way the week prior so will rendezvous at Walwa on Friday 18 as I head back.

Cheers Nige

Confirmed not. 😊
The road I travelled on Tuesday with the 65km or so of rocky dirt is not on the ride circuit. It would have been if it was a decent road.
Most of the participants I know well would cope with it OK, as would I, if I had to. It would definitely not be fun without a GS or equivalent and some good experience with same.

Bill

Gaz, if I can get it together in time, yes, it'll be the Tim bike.
That should provide entertainment and amusement for all... will a Harleye Daversson make it that far? Will I make it that far ON one?
What could possibly go wrong?? affraid
I haven't ridden a Harley since the late 80s when I had a Sportster for about 20 minutes before selling it on and buying a Norton.

Communication

If your mobile phone is Optus, or uses the Optus network, you won’t have any signal at Walwa.

Telstra works OK.

Other places on the route seem to be both or nothing, but I didn’t monitor reception at all locations.

Well guys, I can now confirm that I will be a starter for this year's southern run so I will be seeing some of you on the Thursday night in Young.

Travelling plans from home to Young to be decided later - I might need to leave home a bit later in the day but expect to be in Young by sundown.

Cheers

I'm out for this ride, ( yet again Sad )
Having successfully fitted the sidecar which was meant for the K bike onto the HD, I briefly test rode it around the hills near Repentance Ck, then set off the next morning in the ever increasing rain, through some more back roads in Lismore, then Casino. A few clicks on the western side of Casino the clutch decided to have a good hard lie down, so the outfit ended up back in Casino at a bike shop, waiting for a clutch kit to be ordered and sent for fitting.........

Then it rained some more... and a bit more.... and a bit more. The bike was still high and dry at last report, though I have since seen reports of the Casino CBD flooding, so fingers crossed. Anyway, it's now a case of 'it is what it is', and the bike will get fixed when the guy who runs the bike shops gets his cattle sorted and has helped his mates with flooding problems etc.

Hopefully I'll be able to show up and annoy everyone soon on a ride. What's the next one? Southern Ride 2022 20220211

Dear All,

As per Seanni's inability to attend Bill's Southern ride, I am also pulling the pin (V.reluctantly!!) I've had a lot of grief with my left hand, eventually surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, caused by severe arthritis. Hand is still quite useless, can't pull the clutch in, let alone grasp the handle bar. Physio is sort of working, but it's a long, slow process.

With a bit of luck, Rosskko's memorial trip to Bathurst in May may well be on the cards.

If I was a member of parliament, I'd be a shoe in for the Federal Minister for Aches and Pains!

Also, Dave...I haven't forgotten that it's my shout for the up-market Bundy rum.

I trust you will all have a great Jolly rummaging around the Victorian Alps, and really hope that the weather is kind for you.

Rickmeister.

Bad news for you Ulli. Catch up in Bathurst.
On a better note I ve been cleared to participate by the Doc so will be joining the crew at Young.
Another 200mil on Thursday night might stuff up my chances of getting out my road but so far it looks good.

Final list of 10 expected people back in post 35, as edited. In some cases, the last communication I've seen dates back to December, so I hope its still correct. Any changes not accounted for in post 35, please let me know. Even room for one more at the pub if needed. Smile

We'll miss those who had hoped/planned to come but for various reasons weren't able to.  Sad

When I was there last month, Walwa pub didn't open till 3pm, so anyone there before that will be cooling their heels for a bit. If you get there before I do, let the publican know you're part of the Bill Irvine group.

Reminder - no Optus at Walwa, so if you have the choice, bring a Telstra phone, or a carrier that uses Telstra's network.

See you there.   cheers

Bill
