Trying to get the new to me '87 K100LT back riding like new!

It's currently running and riding but the tires need to be replaced, I'm looking at Dunlop D404 tires.

What do you guys think about these tires? The last post I could find where these tires were mentioned was: https://www.k100-forum.com/t7672-what-size-rubbers-do-you-use
and it seems that not many of you guys are running these?

I am also looking at Metzeler's, which is what the bike currently has (cracked) but these are much more expensive as the Dunlops are sold on Amazon, and are made in the stock sizes front and rear and the same sizes that are currently on this bike.

Like anything in life, you get what you pay for, my question is are the Dunlops that bad? My mechanic told me they don't grip quite as well, but I'm wondering if they'll be decent as my budget is limited for this project. Does anyone have experience with these tires?

Any advice or insight appreciated, I'll have to get some pics of my bike uploaded soon and I'm new to this forum.

You get lots of different replies.

Personally I hate Lasertecs, regard them as lethal and couldn't get them off the bikes fast enough. I ride all year about 40,000km on the bikes. I love the Bridgestone Battlax BT45/46 and use them on all my Ks but the guys use others too so a degree of choice.

Oh boy, a tire thread!

If you are on a budget and can mount and balance your own tires my choice would be Shinko Tourmasters from Chaparral Motorsports.  You can get both front and rear in the stock sizes shipped for under $200 and they will give you about 9,000 miles.  I've been using them on my K75RT for about 5 years with no complaints.

So... heading off lots of replies at the post (geddit?), most of us in Europe seem to be running either Bridgestone BT45s or Avon RoadRiders. The BT45s are a bit stickier and the RoadRiders last a bit longer.

Isa RoadRider man.

I want onlookers to believe my moto's tires are made in Germany, too. That's why they're Metzeler Sportecs.

This poor bugger's been trying to sell this set for two eBay rotations now. They're plus-one sizes, but a decent tyre, and close to your 'neck o' the woods', too. A very short drive Manchester, Live Free or Die to Burlington, Massatucky. D404 are a 'hard' tyre which will give you a whole heaps of miles but won't give much feedback over the road. They're more suited to Harley Sportsters & such like.

eBay 110/80-18 & 140/80-17

I'll add my endorsement of the Shinkos too.  I used a number of those tires on bikes other than my K1100LT and, for my "old man" riding style they work very well indeed. If you are on a budget (and who isn't these days) I'd give the Shinkos serious consideration.

I have just changed from Dunlop to Michelin Pilot Activ. Understandably the K100 feels much better, but the new tyres always do!

I have run Pilots on my Airhead for several years now and been very happy with them.
