I have been told you can not fit a rear shock from earlier K100 to a 1988 model. Has anyone heard this?

Not aware of that being an issue and I have swapped some around. The 2v shock is shorter than the 4v shock but at 1988 yours is a 2v K.

i wouldnt ...unless its been refurbished properly with new seals etc

there were some different shocks available in the early stages  ie that self levelling jobby etc ,
but as Olaf has said,  the geometry hasnt changed on all the 2 valve models

all depends on what you think is normal ..

Send your shock to RAD Shocks in Brisbane and they will refurbish it. I had my original K75 shock done by them at 77,000km and it cost me $240 which included rechroming the shaft. That was about 5 years ago and I've done another 55,000km on it since with no trouble.

I'm sure there would be other members on here who have used them.

Try this link.

+1 I'm on my second one in 20+ years. I believe he'll modify, lower or do different spring. There are a few guys using them. Mick 67 has one and I believe he's happy with it. We went moto crossing with them and they survived.
Regards Martin.
