I'm getting a lot of white smoke when starting my 1985 K100 but only when it spends longer the ten minutes on the side stand. It never happens after short rest or when on the center stand. I had an old goldwing that would do the same thing and it ended up needing new piston rings. Am I looking at the same thing here?

Nope - they all do it. Flat engine, cylinders on the left, bike on the sidestand, oil runs past the rings when they're in the right/wrong place - instant anti-mozzie screen.

Some people (including me - but only with one out of my three Ks) find that killing the engine with the bike upright, and keeping it that way for a moment or so before tipping it onto the sidestand, makes a big difference.

I now do the last thirty yards home freewheeling with a dead engine. The neighbours think I'm super considerate.

I believe the early K's rings weren't pinned and smoked a bit more. The latter ones had pinned rings which reduced but did not eliminate the smoking. If it is a concern either put it up on the centre stand, or tilt the engine to the right after switching it off for a few seconds before deploying the side stand.
Regards Martin.

At rallies years ago we always cheered the K bikes when they started up of a morning cause it took care of the mozzies.

My '87 RS rarely smokes, even tho' it's old enough to.

I could be wrong (what me!) but the earliest iterations of the K (the ones with a Peugeot engine har har) did have the engine the other way round.
Maybe they forgot why?

Moriarti, sir,

Based on your fine suggestion I'm going to alter my super-smoker Madass stand to the right. Smoking when starting 112350

...okay, it'll really screw up bikes-in-a-row parking, but I AM left handed!

Edit#2. And nobody seems to want to park next to the Madass anyway, wonder why?

Edit#3. Said it before Dai did! Very Happy

As for kick stand on the right, if you do that you get water and lots of crap in the plug recesses. Don't do it. Oh, you also get it in the gas tank too because of the cap drain hole position being on the left.

there are 1 or 2 right hand sidestands that I have seen down here

reason is, some disability in swinging the side stand out , (left leg doesn't work well anymore)

Ag bikes, or agricultural bikes, do come with, or you can option side stands on both sides. That way the farmer can stop the bike and get off either side without switching the bike off, or to cope with gradients.

Any Airhead, Oilhead or K Bike combustion chamber when tilted below level, coinciding with potentially worn out valve guides, old, worn rings, or that miraculous chance of all three piston rings aligning like the planets above, only this time at the bottom of the bore, could give that puff or that steady stream of oil product burning off upon start-up. You get used to it, I guess.
