the sprag has eaten itself while in the engine.

The starter gear looks good and the bearing surface that the sprag dogs engage with all look good.

I will fit a new sprag ring but i probably wont fit a new gear.

Hey Olaf!.

You have now! Smile have now! Can't seem to find anyone who has had a similar experience on the interweb or much info about the freewheeling gear dimensions / v wear. Apparently it is difficult to assess the condition. £80 on Motorworks kind has me thinking that it'll be fine. Still, though, my thinking is, the sprag is buried so if I'm that far now I might as well replace.!

I was warned by Andy Hourigan that the sprag was weak about a year ago when he had it for throttle bodies. Didn't expect it to obliterate itself.

Have the sump off and have pulled out a few more chunks of cage and the little springs...

J.

Andy is pretty good with bikes and sees a few Ks.

Sprag clutches are well known to give out as in not work, but self destruct interests me as your one would or should have been the later one. If you do get a replacement clean it thoroughly as in leave it sit in some cleaner for a week to get it looking like new by removing the built up crap.

Hi Olaf..

I have gone for a new one from Motorworks, buried as it is I don't want to take the risk of using a secondhand part.

It presented itself as a mechanical clatter when starting which I thought was the cush drive for the alternator wearing out but as it turns out it was the sprag eating itself.

I have the sump off the bike and have pulled out a few bits of torn up metal from the sprag. Think i have it all out.

Oil change and a new filter time i reckons..

Are you sure its the sprag clutch and not the output shaft?

Hi Olaf..

Definitely. The ring gear exploded in the starter clutch assembly, thankfully the idler gear and the starter gear are all in good shape. Output shaft and flywheel are all good..

Turned the engine over by hand and no more bits fell out so that's good! im going to fit a magnet to the sump plug to mop up the rest of the debris.

J

Must have been gum, and although it hadn't started the spin no start thing it must have been enough for a kickback to grab it and destroy it??
