Well I haven't even started the project yet and I've stumbled on my first hurdle - trying to mount the second hand K1100 centre stand I bought from Motorworks.

I can only guess that they've sent me the wrong Supporting Bracket, as seen in the K1100 repair manual diagram:

Well this is embarrassing... K1100 Centre Stand Centre10

It just doesn't seem right to me that the circlips on the outside of the Sleeve (part 5) should push up hard against the stand.  I would have thought the Sleeves would tighten up hard against the Supporting Bracket, inside the recess there for them, and the circlips would have some play against the centre stand.  I envisage the Sleeves being fixed, with the Centre Stand rotating around them.

I can see from the diagram that Motorworks have not included (part 12) Shackle for the side stand, so I have nothing to attach the two springs to...  scratch

And now that I'm writing this and looking at the diagram again, I can see that yes indeed, the Supporting Bracket is the wrong type - it looks different in the picture  Mad

Having said all that - is there anything wrong with mounting it the way you can see in the last two pictures, without the cirlips?  It's not like it can fall off.

Any feedback is appreciated.  Cheers guys.

Elliot

It looks to me like you've got the main mounting bracket upside down. That bracket should work - I've put two on that look like that.

Thanks Dai. Did you use this same mounting bracket with the K1100 centre stand?

I did try flipping the bracket upside down the other way but there's just no other way it can fit - it only fits one way to get the bolts in.  And that's not the problem - the problem is the width of the centre stand mounts being too small between the bracket mounts, leaving a big gap between the stand mounts and the bracket mounts.

I think I answered my own question as I was writing that post and looking at the pictures, as the bracket I have from Motorworks looks different to the K1100 parts diagram.

Olaf has told me I need the whole K1100 assbly for it to work. I'm pretty sure Motorworks have sent me a K100 mounting bracket and a K1100 centre stand.  I'm already cheesed that they didn't send me the spring bracket for the side stand (which I also purchased from them).  Just had a thought - how do I know which bloody side stand they've sent me?!

I guess I better wait for England to get to work and pick up the phone...  Well this is embarrassing... K1100 Centre Stand 178468

That is the correct 1100 bracket, nods, but it looks as though the stand legs have spread outwards. I'm currently doing some mods to an 1100 stand and the stand bearings on mine sit close to the bracket.

I would guess that the circlips were put there to prevent the stand legs from spreading as I can't see any other reason. the early stands never had circlips.

Paul.

Thanks a lot Paul.  I just got off the phone to Motorworks and will email them some pictures.  Like you said, the motorworks guy said I definitely have the correct bracket, however there's a chance they sent me the incorrect centre stand.

Also like you said, I need the stand bearings to sit close to the bracket so the two sleeves can be pushed home in their seats by the countersunk head screws.  That way the stand will rotate freely on the sleeves with a bit of clearance for the circlips.

Thanks again mate for responding and letting me know how it works for you  Well this is embarrassing... K1100 Centre Stand 112350

As you are playing with the centre stand, you might be interested in this:-

Some of the pictures from that old post have disappeared, but here's a picture of my 1100 stand at present. You'll notice that I've bored out the 'oval' stand bearings and fitted Oilite bushes.

Hi nods, I thought I might throw you another couple of photos for you to mull over.

These are of my stand assembly on my K1100LT. The first one has a couple of notations highlighting the circlips in place, the spacers and one note to ignore the bracket on the rear right bolt as it is part of the mounting for a Staintune exhaust system.

I have a vague recollection that those spacers are not used on some models.

The other photo is a wider shot of the whole stand assembly. Hope they are useful.

As you can tell from the underside of my exhaust - I am a rider not a polisher!!

That's gold, thanks a lot Gaz.  That's how I want mine to look!  There's no gap between the stand and the mounting bracket - I have a 4mm gap on either side, which I could close by tightening up the two screws on either side, however that was just ugly as the circlips were then very tight against the stand mount and the screws were moving (and loosening) when the stand was opened and closed rather than the stand rotating around the sleeves.

Also reminded me I need a couple of extra parts - the two rubber grommets for the springs and the rubber stopper for the muffler.

Cheers,
Nods

Motorworks have been good and will send me the correct stand free of charge, and have said I can keep the stand they have already sent me.  I also need a shackle for the side stand springs to attach to, and they are sending that free of charge as well.  Even though it's been an inconvenience, these things happen when dealing over the phone between Australia and England, and I wanted to give them credit for fixing up their mistake promptly.

It's a relief to know that I hadn't fallen at the first hurdle - my confidence was a bit shaken!

The pic below shows that the centre stand mounts were too wide for the mounting bracket.

Cheers,
Elliot

Nods, I'm more of a silver solderer than a welder, so that's how I 'welded' the bracket.

As a thought, I would try pulling the two stand legs together in a vice, to make them fit the mounting bracket. Nothing to loose as Motorworks are sending you another stand and you might end up with 2 usable stands!

Paul.

I received the second (quite rusty stand) today and got it on no problem - it feels like a little win!

Although it's still not perfect, the function is fine (need a rubber stop for the exhaust however).  As you can see, the two sleeves stick out quite a bit meaning the supplied circlips are redundant.  The two o-rings on the sleeve are inside the stand housing so they will hold the grease, and the sleeves are now tight against the mounting bracket recesses which means the stand can pivot freely on the sleeves.

Thanks for your help, and now I know about the nifty centre stand lock!   Well this is embarrassing... K1100 Centre Stand 22936
