Anyone remember these from the 1990's..?

They're black tubular racks that mount on the top of the K panniers.

The idea being, you can easily attach a rollbag, either side of the seat.

Ron Thackeray from the BMW Club made them.

And I think they were sold by Ultimate Source too.

Anyone got a set knocking about..?

Hi David, I use bags which I think are similar to what you are describing except I don't have any racks.

Have a look at the photo below of my wife and I touring on my K1100 and you will see there is a bag secured on top of the pannier. We use them for a sleeping bag and a light weight self inflating sleeping mat - one on each side.



I had the bags made to the required size and down each side of the bag there is a strip like a belt which is cross stitched to achieve "belt loops" which stop the attachment strap from sliding around and keeping the bag attached. To secure to the bike I run the elasticised strap through these loops and the pannier handle and the passenger grab handle on the ducktail. The photo below gives a view of the bags I had made.



We have used this arrangement for many tens of thousands of kilometres without any issues, although it may not work if you are intending to carry heavy items in that location.

David that photo was taken when we were approaching Cairns in North Queensland on our way to a major motorcycle rally. The organisers had placed photographers on the few main entry roads to the region and snapped every bike they could - of course for a fee you could buy a photo of yourselves. It was worth it as you don't get the opportunity of photographing yourself in full flight. At the time I didn't notice the photographer but Ruth did.

That journey was a 5,000km round trip over 3 weeks camping all the way with everything we needed on the bike with us.
