I've successfully used thin plastic (food containers/ ice cream) or cut down food /drink cans in conjunction large worm drive hose clips with plenty of lubrication.

Too complicated for me. I'll stick with two screwdrivers and a pair of thumbnails.

I've used a hose clamp with success on several R series motors. The wide ones just cover all 3 rings.

cheers guys , all good suggestions
the problem im having is locating the pinned rings whilst clamping up the device .a progressive clamp process will let me do that , instead of a clamp designed for minimum of 75mm (the pistons are about 66mm )
ill get the right thing ,in time
meanwhile, all silicon coated surfaces have been cleaned up and ready for a new reassembly .
one lives in hope ....

I have never bin deep inside a brick engine. Are the piston rings pinned or have any crazy orientation being a horizontal stroke?

it seems there were some changes ..likely after 1988 ...I have an 88 motor here ,likely from an LT , with the same pistons etc as the 86 variants (first real change to a few things internal and external like foot plates , drive shaft etc )
the motor I used from Rickg has different piston design , including a thinner first compression ring , and pinned second compression ring , approximately the same size in thickness , some folklore also indicates that the pistons in the redesign were a little lighter as well . cant be sure on that one at this point , as I didn't do a weight comparison ....bugga .... but ii did notice that the balance holes (taken out of the crank ) seemed to be less in number and depth ...this could just be a particular crank balance thing , but surmising that there may be some compensation for the engineered expected weights of the piston gear as well ?
you have to remember that after 88 the k100 rs also sported 16 valves ...but in a parallel production path lt versions - 8 valve rather than 16 valve .. were still being made
in any case assembly of motor to frame went well , and quickly
with cables, fluid pipes final drive etc all done by days end , ready for a start , which I postponed until the next day ,with just battery and efi computer to connect up
I chose to not use the starter motor relay for the initial start as I thought the stalled (and relatively tight big end bearings ) torque of the motor to turn it over would be significant and could possibly weld the starter relay .
a very thick cable was attached to the starter motor with direct battery connection (by hand ) attempted . this way I could run the fuel pump continual till I was assured fuel pressure was sufficient ..
amazingly after just 3 attempts he fired up ....note a dry sprag clutch was causing concern with it not engaging at all for several attempts ...but on rotation of the motor ..at last on the third attempt he fired right up ....lots of smoke from build lubrication eventually cleared
an engineering ride around the area on some of the back roads today had me cruising at a little under 3,000 revs for a few hours , just to make sure that the engine crank and conrod parts bedded in somewhat
final panel parts to attach , fairing lowers and radiator cover , knee pads etc to go on tomorrow after todays success
keep in mind there are three items that haven't run together in the same engine before , output shaft , sprag clutch mechanism , and the crank output gear , so hoping that they will wear to each other over coming days and miles travelled for a quieter sounding motor
first impressions .....sweet !
thank Darren ...looking forward catching up ...be safe till then ol mate

A great result Charlie. Amazing how the insides of the engine vary, depending on when it was manufactured. Having had a 83 and a 87 K, sitting them next to one another, the number of changes were incredible. Now we know a bit more about the insides.

no , this was at a small lookout above Emmaville north of Glen Innes , the background was particularly pleasing with some greenery in the scene
we were through there a few weeks ago travelling towards Torrington , and the land was mostly dust , still haven't washed Gerty since , other than parking her out in the rain this week ...yeah a sorry state of affairs but once fred is proved reliable , Gerty is in for some tlc to the output shaft and gearbox

just an update
leg is healing from the Gerty drop event on the way to Karuah river rally
still 5 weeks to go in the moon boot
input to gearbox bearings were too tight and made some noises , so stripped it out and replaced , with hopefully good preload this time
Fred back together and ready to rumble over to the Delungra bike show this weekend
yes walking stick is attached ,, well I cant walk without assistance eh ?!!!

seeing that everything is in lockdown
decided to chase vibration whilst at cold idle on Fred ,
I don't remember having the stop disc installed to the output shaft - clutch basket during the last engine rebuild ,,,and the one I found on an old clutch basket assembly is cracked ...blast !
oh well , brass came to mind for fabrication ....so several weeks later a piece of brass turned up (100 x 100 x 1 mm)
over to a mates workshop and onto his new to him lathe
producing this , one for Gerty and one for Fred alongside the original article (cracked )
wont be long and ill have it installed , but pity the mail was so slow getting here , oh well
being experimental id expect that some fretting could happen over time with the movement of the two assemblies
but definitely worth a try .

been a while with Fred off the road , but today reassembled the rear end , and now looking far more like a bike again .
startup noise was greatly reduced with little or no noise evident from flogging of the output shaft mechanisms
a quick ride around the block a few times shows promising results as well
ill have to put some miles on the beast locally before attempting a good long distance venture , but sounds and looking good so far

i have a mind for some personalized - designed badges for the tank Arlina , more details on that as i get some good software for the design ...had a friend who has laser etch and cutting ability , locally , but has moved on a bit .... so will plan for something in the future out of 3 or 4 mm aluminum (to keep the theme ) and find another engineer - fabricator to cut the design
took a ride on the improved cold start knocking sound ...(or lack of ) beast, south today to discuss some issues around with our mate smithy and just a good catch-up indeed ... he (Fred) ran sweet as could be .....for me still disturbing ...the lack of engine noise emanating from the exhaust ...but i guess il get used to it , but do have a couple of other substitute mufflers for a good grunty "zorst " in the future
some pics along the way
and winter is just about upon us , with decidedly cool temperatures along the way ....brrrrr

Assuming that Fred is a boy and Gerty is a girl, do you expect there to be a dominant one in the relationship? As Fred has been getting all the TLC recently, is not Gerty going to be a little jealous? Senior partner and all that......

im reminded that will crean sent me a comment and reminder in another place about layers of clothing ...mind you, i only had the summer jacket on at that time , such a good day as i set off . but a trap for later afternoon riders who didnt plan ahead ...lol .. i beter put that top box on him so i can carry a bit more than minor items in the pockets i created ...(such a god send that idea with mobile devices used often ..actually )
poor old gerty has been in repair after the Karuah trip ....so not ignored at all ..with further plans for output shaft fix and a frame work to reduce evident corrosion on all the exposed areas and likely a colour change , likely later this year , as soon as i can prove reliability on fred as a daily ride ...
Gerty is also currently going though a seat cover change after a few years of service and before renewal of rego this month (seat cover is cracked but not all the way through . more uv damage hardening than anything else as you know she was exposed to radical sun exposure for al the time i had her in q/land outside the awning )
lol martin ....far too much Black .....giggles
lol Al ..i can say without doubt that Fred is defiantly a boy now .... he's been ground ,stripped , recovered . set-upon by disgusting hands and thoroughly converted to a totally different feel in both ride and stance on the bike ....i just hope he now accepts this ...and wont try to buck me off in retaliation any time soon ...

just an update ...Fred made it into the Motorworks 2021 Calendar , just a couple of 100x 60 mm snippets of the engine , (right way up this time ) and a late afternoon shot the day club rego was gained , back in the bowels of the calendar (may and december )...many thanks to motor works for the calendar pack received just today .
