I'm in the process of replacing the clutch plate on my '91 K100RT and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to centralise the plates without the need for a specialist tool. Trial and error or is there a way I can make something up to do the trick?

Also, what's the best way to clean the old gunk off the housing, pressure plate etc.,? I saw someone mentioned petrol but surely there must be a better cleaner.

Hi, you can use brake cleaner spray to remove gunk from clutch parts.
Before removing cluth parts mark positions of it with some marker od screwdriver. If you already removed without marking look at contact surfaces and wil see marks in which position parts were mounted. Just connect it same way.
I didnt care about balancing of friction plate because it isnt heavy to disturb rotation like heavier clutch parts.

Simply position the clutch disc in the centre as you tighten the screws in a cross pattern. I never use a centring tool on Ks or Airheads.
After cleaning the remaining components with brake parts or contact cleaner, as suggested, measure how flush the flat surfaces of the two pressure plates are, or you might be back at it when the fresh new disc makes half, or tapered contact with the old, worn plates.

Like TWB says, you can eyeball the centering pretty good and then just snug the screws on the clutch. They should not be too tight so that the clutch plate can move. Use the transmission to centre the clutch plate by reinstalling the transmission on the bell housing and removing it. The clutch actuator arm should be attached while doing this operation and be carefull handling the transmission so as not to bent the arm. Remove the transmission and tighten the clutch screws to their final torque.
