Hi all

I took delivery of my K100 RS today and I am going through the various issues. 

There is a slightly engine rattle, most noticeable at idle and especially on the overrun between idle and 2500rpm. 

I have tried to take a video of the noise:



I noticed on my ride around to get fuel, that at one point the noise went in time with the indicator. 

Any ideas? Sounds cam chainy. Thanks

First thing I would do is check the balance of the throttle bodies. If they are out of sync you hear all sorts of apparent nasties.

Monkey nuts (rubber dampers) in the alternator?
Different noise when indicators operating due to load on the alternator varying.
If you do a search on the forum you'll find more info. Common enough problem on bricks but easily sorted.

That's yer output shaft gears gnashing. Could nearly guaranty it, as was the case w/my '85 K100. There's a spring (C-shaped) that keeps the gears meshed and what keeps it fastened to the gear face has worn. Hard to explain; you'll see it if/when you dive in for the replacing thereof. See if your output shaft assembly has been upgraded, too, as BMW put a fix in for this very problem. 

The spring's about $5.00 - it's the journey to it that's costly (time and/or money) but you'll be pleased no end for your efforts, as the engine will sound incredibly smooth without that rattle. 

The rubber alternator dogs are probably in need of replacement as they are rubber and old and likely vestiges of the plump springy things they were when coming off the assembly line. Easy and cheap replacement job and good a 'why the h*ll not' procedure.

OK back from playing with the bike. 

Firstly, did the throttle body balance, (didn't even realise you can balance the TB's!) They where a fair bit out. 

I need to replace the rubber stoppers, as they are perished. 

The method of winding all the adjusters in, then turning out 1 1/2 turns for me didn't work, the engine just warbled along at 500rpm. I ended up having to use 2+ turns out, but they are now spot on, and it idles much better. 

Secondly the alternator. I removed it, and re-connected the battery (which is massive btw) and voila, no more noise.

So it looks like I need new monkey nuts (thanks Comberjohn) 

I also had a chance to remove my ABS ecu ready for repair (should it be economical) .

Your only in the Knuthaus a while and already on the monkey nuts.

Born Again Eccentric [BAE] was over for our Norn Iron weekend last September. Took ferry from Holyhead and Belfast is only about 90 minutes up from the port, motorway all the way if you want on the M1. Comberjohn, Dai, Markzz would lead you astray in the nicest possible way.

We have a weekend in September and the roads etc are great and we usually have a very nice meet up. Date is not decided for this year yet but there is a thread up for it already.

BAE will also be over on Saturday 1st August for a week, as will Becky. We have a meet up planned for Saturday 8th August so that would also be a good weekend. A few of us have a camping trip planned taking in some of the Wild Atlantic Way. If you are on for some camping and feel adventurous either of the 2 weekends would be good for you.

Both sound pretty good, the September outing sounds pretty good. I'm camping out on the 31st may with some other bikers. 

Always good to go with somebody who knows where they are going  I'm not the fastest rider about but ill always keep up.
