I have the BMW electric vest, but don't get much of a chance to use it up here in Queensland.
No riding for me for the foreseeable future. I hit a big eastern grey roo near Emmaville (Glen Innes) 3 weeks ago on the Suzuki trailie.
I'm having shoulder surgery at Ipswich hospital this afternoon to have screws and plates inserted.

Woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the roof - just what I don't need, but it's a balmy 6 degC so shouldn't be too bad. Rain radar looks like it will have passed by the time I'm leaving.

Talked Rick G into a 8:00am rendevous at Denman so I didn't have to kick off too early.

Late news from Rosskko last evening was that he is a goer cheers

Cheers

At Jim & Jo's koffee and skone house, Cooma. (Jim is my son and ex employee of Gaz80.) We even allowed Rossko to have some tea, even though its difficult to put a K in tea.

Goulburn to Cooma this morning, fog about 90% of the way. Makes for interesting riding, especially when the fog is also on the glasses and visor.

Gaz, RickG and Rossko continued on to Yarangobilly, while RT and I, according to our plan to stay sane and not to freeze off any delicate parts of our anatomy, returned home.

Always great to enjoy the K kompany. I hope the insane 3 survive the weekend.

Thanks to the Irvines for the family hospitality.
I can state without equivocation that not have a fairing or heated grips in Alpineesque fog and air is not a good idea. My hands froze, but a years worth of cakes and booze kept the torso warm.
A nice warm ride home topped off a good trip.
Thanks guys.

Just a quick one while I soak away the cold in a bath.
Waz never made it.
About ten km from the rally the back wheel came off his outfit.
Thankfully one of them came out unhurt.
He is awaiting young Waz to collect him with a trailer.

Oh, I had a good time

I'm home but bike is still in trailer.
I seen a little bit of snow and had a wild ride. Almost made it to the site but at 110kph I lost the rear wheel. Will be needing a new disc too.

Big thanks to Al58 for the ride, help and double back to Talbingo. Lots of riders stopped to help but threads are too damaged to re attach the wheel.

So Waz, it appears that you can get the rear wheel off without removing the rear section of the mudguard. Very convenient.

Glad you're OK. I'm enjoying a coffee in Bathurst at the moment. Rick G  & I parted company in Cowra with Rick heading for Dubbo to catch up with Stan.

2015 Alpine Rally - Page 2 Img_0214

No problems Woz, I've had plenty help me over the years with breakdowns etc, I'm always happy to help out.  It's a debt you never pay back enough.  The real luck was that you kept it vaguely straight and didn't go into that gully, it would have been a much worse result for all.

Now just a few Kms before Woz started singing "You picked a fine time to leave loose wheel", Woz and I were travelling together and then we caught another K100 sidecar travelling along as well, 3 in convoy! I've never experienced that before.  The guy up front was Hans, another fine upstanding member of BMWTCNSW.

But The K sidecar hoodoo continued over the weekend, Woz's reduction back to 2 wheels we know about, and then there were 2.  Sunday morning Hans noticed some coolant leaking at the front of his motor, pulled the right fairing inner to get to the rad cap to add colant, as well as a frozen green mass he noticed the right downtube on the frame had a 4 mm gap where it had snapped through (I've had this happen myself 21 yrs ago).  After much discussion we got a sturdy tiedown strap and winched the top of the frame down to the subframe below the engine, to close the gap and take the stress off the upper frame. Hans decided he wanted to try and baby it home (his decision).

They say bad luck runs in threes and I was the last of the Ks travelling together left.  So last night riding into Burraga (near dusk) to meet Marie for another nights camp I hit a roo (approx 5ft Eastern Grey).  He hopped right to left across my path cleared my path completely then when he noticed me he panicked, turned and hopped back in front of me.  I was probably doing 80-90 on impact.  I hit him with the sidecar body, ran up and over him.  Mine had a bit of fur stuck to the guard, damaged tail-light and he got up and away but I don't think he was real good.

Another great weekend

Al

My tent is actually dark green in colour. I remembered to put the chair inside with me overnight.

Forum member Corro and his family brought a recording thermometer with them just for the hell of it. The red needle is the overnight low. When I checked it after the sun had been up a while the temp had skyrocketed up from -12C to -10C. Certainly the coldest night that I had spent outdoors in my life.

Probably why the guys looked like this. 2015 Alpine Rally - Page 2 Img_1522
Rosskko decided to do something about it and trudged off into the frozen landscape to collect some more fire wood. That lonely figure in the centre is him. Well done mate!

RickG & I headed off around lunch time and lunched in Tumut then headed north for an overnight stop in Cowra. The Lachlan Valley Hotel was basic but reasonably priced and ensuite facilities. Worth checking out if you need an overnight in Cowra.
2015 Alpine Rally - Page 2 Img_1527

Rick & I parted ways in Cowra with Rick heading for a meet up with Stan in Dubbo and I went towards home via Blayney, Bathurst, Sofala and Rylstone. This was the last fuel up before arriving home at 2:45pm yesterday.

Good trip all round. Glad I had the K1100 for the prevailing weather conditions.

Cheers

"Rosskko decided to do something about it and trudged off into the frozen landscape to collect some more fire wood. That lonely figure in the centre is him. Well done mate"

Are you sure it's not a yowie?

Just as hairy and smelly...apparently! Very Happy

Great photos, thanks for posting them.

Waz, sorry to hear your tale of woe. by the sound of it the exact same thing happened to me 50km out of Gin Gin (Qld) a few years ago. I can testify that it is not much fun going down the road "like a dog with worms" In my case the "quick fix" was a hire car, 1000km back to Townsville, pick up my spare FD, bolts and disc, tail light etc and back to Gin Gin. 30 hrs after the incident we were back on the road. I was really lucky to find the wheel complete with hub adapter etc which ended up on the other side of the road a couple of hundred mtrs away in some long grass. Found by a fellow motorcyclist who stopped to help while we were waiting for the tow truck.
Hope yours is as simple to fix, I know it is not much consolation but at least you know that you are not alone.
Good luck

Arrived home with near 3000km under the wheels. Overnight in Coonabarrabran and an early start and made it home at 2.15pm.
The K1100 ran like a charm and only a bit strange in the handling dept because I loaded it too heavy to the rear.
Very little to add to the story as Gaz has said most of it. Bad news for Waz but good that he came through OK as bikes are easy to fix, usually.
All weekend the drivers were behaving fairly well but as Tuesday hit and the double demerit points long weekend finished the idiocy started again so I ducked across to Inverell and Glen Innes to avoid them. Hardly a vehicle to be seen.
