I posted in the rivet post first cause at that time, that was the most pressing isssue. That also upset me a bit but since I've started this rebuild attempt that was not the most depressing setback.
Last night while preparing the pistons for reinsertion I noticed something funny about #2's oil ring, and when I applied light pressure to open it up some, it just crumbled into 4 pieces. So I've got more parts on the way.
Anyway, here is the story. In the winter of 1995 I wasnt able to keep the bike running like I wanted to and one evening I decided to head out and start it up. It just wouldnt start, not sure if it was too cold or if I had another problem related to the system itself. So I did a no no and used some starter fluid, just a little bit, and it almost started. So I sprayed just a little bit more into the breather box, and when I hit the starter button, it started to crank, and then backfired. Next thing I new the breather box burst into flames. I was able to quickly put the flames out. I was young and stupid at that time, and I didnt have much money if any so I left the bike alone. I was really disapointed in myself about the whole issue, and was in a lot of ways affraid of the bike.
Here I am over a decade later, and Im going to make it whole again. This is a list of where im at.
All engine covers, bodys, have been bead blasted. Still have some glass to deal with removing but its cleaner then most conditions at shops I've been in.
new piston rings
new output shaft parts
new new conrod bolts
cylinder walls look execptional
had to remove rust and lap the valves back in
going to need a lot of the rubber boots and most of the rubber hoses/tubes
transmission had shifting problems, not specific as to why, may look at replacement, some of the sped matching gears have rounded edges(another disapointment).
all the splines were dry(not specifically my fault on this one. long story. poor service from a dealership)splines however show minimal wear
I do not know the condition of the injectors, or any of the electrical systems(this is the pray part)
It used to be such a beautiful bike and a joy to ride, Im just wanting to fix it. To finish another project on my list of stuff to complete.
anyway, since I have the thing in a million pieces(well its not really that many, but its a lot) if you want a picture of a specific part or method im going to use, let me know.
Thanks y'all
Phil
