My indicators started behaving very eratically over a period of a day. There was no pattern to their behaviour and then they stopped working altogether.

One of the first things I checked were bulbs then fuses. All bulbs ok. Fuse #3 and #7 were blown. I replaced those and they blew again.

I then removed all bulbs including the flasher bulbs in the instruments and the flasher relay unit itself. There was no short to earth. I've also visually checked all the wiring and connectors front to rear. All looks good

I checked both left and right indicator switches on the bars as well as the cancel switch. All function perfectly.

After putting everything back together without the flasher relay, all works fine (no indicators of course) and fuses don't blow. Reinstall the flasher relay and fuses blow again.

My conclusion is that the flasher relay is fritzed.

Have I troubleshooted this problem correctly or have I missed something?

I've found a relay online for $40 plus frt. Is this an ok price?

The K is certainly a strange beast when it comes to electrics. Would that cause a dead short tho?

Have you tried to re install the flasher relay without the bulbs in the flasher?

I think your diagnosis points to the flasher relay.  CF's suggestion will confirm that suspicion.  It's possibly the flasher since it is a complex electronic circuit.

The price for the flasher is almost what people ask for a complete harness and relay box.  I bought a harness complete with everything for a 4V k100 for $25.00.  I didn't need the harness; I needed the connectors, wire and components.  Look around Ebay for deals on harnesses, especially broken harnesses as they fetch lower prices. (e.g. cheap harness)

You could try bench testing the relay as shown in this Youtube video:

Good point. I'll try that over the weekend. Thanks

I've been able to pick up a flasher unit pretty cheap. That'll arrive next week. My concern is that if there is a fault somewhere else it may damage the new relay.

Thanks Robmack. I can follow that well enough to rig up a test I think but can anyone tell me what he was saying when he refered to the IC? My German is not so good. Laughing
Cheers

He's (probably) talking about clipping pin 7 on the circled IC to stop hyperflashing.  He is connecting LED signals afterall.

Since both fuses blows as soon you connects the relay I believe that you have
a major short internal in the relay.

You can open the relay (the housing is just pushed on) and look for burnt
components other traces of a short....could be you just need a few new components.
In my opinion you have nothing to lose.

Yeah I did have a look at that but didn't see anything obvious. I'll try CF's suggestion above to confirm and should have the new relay by middle of next week.
