Hi People,

My first bike in Oz, NSW as I moved here about 8 months ago. Got a 1983 K100 that has no registration or paperwork. I have been told that to get it registered i have to get the CTP first, then blue slip and finally the Rego.
Its a bit of a pig at present and needs quite a bit of work.
When i tried the online REVS it asks for a 17 digit VIN number but mine only has 0004??9x100, any ideas, or do i need to visit the RTA.

Thanks......

G'day Dicke
                   Try this link>Car History Check - CarHistory.com.au‎
I had a few reports done on Ks recently with no probs, just enter vin number plus k100 ect:
BTW just try getting the blue slip first, before you pay for the CTP.

Welcome Dicke,

Just wondering why you want a revs check?
I do not think you need one for rego.
Any place that does a blue slip will have access to the RTA records and will just punch in the vin themselves to get all the details.

If you just want to find details on the bike then use THIS vin decoder. It should tell you most of what you need to know.

Think i meant to get CTP first, then blue slip followed by REGO. As it has no plates is it ok to ride to get the blue slip?
Cant get my head round all these slip colors  Question . Got a company car so never had to deal with it.

Sorry for the bad news Dicke.

You cant get a green slip till you have a blue slip and you cant get comprehensive till you get a green slip, but if you get a green slip it wont be valid because you wont have a blue slip so the comprehensive will not be valid so you can't get it registered because the green slip........

Good news.

You are allowed to ride the bike by the most direct route to get a blue slip and then ride it home.

Then get a green slip.
Then get registration.
Then get insurance (3rd party, comprehensive, theft etc)

If at any of the insurance bits you get into the catch 22 loop, get an online quote from NRMA. Either CTP Green slip or comprehensive. Take the option to pay in person.
You now have valid insurance and 21 days to pay. Don't pay and it gets cancelled. Crash and pay the premium and you are covered.
The premium will probably be in vicinity of $650, but just don't pay and shop around.

Good luck

THIS is probably the only worthwhile content in my whole post.  Driving an Unregistered Vehicle.

Nothing like making it easy!!!! So I can ride with no CTP (green Slip?) to get a blue slip, then to get a green slip, so i can insure the thing. Well thats clear.......clear as mud.
I love Oz so much, but you have some really stupid red tape rules, and Nazi pen pushers that love making life so difficult.

I could start moaning, but then i would be a stereotypical brit. I'll put the kettle on instead and drink tea!

I think it is written in the constitution of the state that NSW has to do things differently to all the other states and that if by some remote chance one of the other states chooses to do it the stupid way that NSW does it then they have to immediately change to something even more bizare.  Hmmmm that sounds familiar.

Dicke, I have bought two bikes that were unregistered and were also imported (as in not originally sold in Australia, which adds more complexity) and after going through exactly what Rosskko described I went to the friendly RTA for confirmation that it was legal to ride to the blue slip inspection. They confirmed it was but added that a policeman had the "discretion" to book you anyway if he saw fit (as Rick says, this is NSW).

With the amount of attention given to the highway around here by the police this was when I gave up and borrowed a trailer to take the bike for a blue slip expecting quite a thorough inspection - the guy did a quick lap around the trailer yelling out "headlight" "horn" "blinkers" etc. then said "start it". By the time the engine had done two revolutions he had disappeared back into his shed to dive into the paperwork.

Might be worth considering.

Cheers

If memory serves me correctly a REVS check should tell you whether the vehicle is still encumbered.  That is, somebody owes money on the purchase of the vehicle.  I think what in the US may be called "clear title".

Unless you want to be a charity and pay off someone else's debt, it is worth checking prior to any vehicle purchase.  A legit seller will have no objection.  It will not tell you if the vehicle is stolen.   Talk to the transport department for that.

Dickie, you will need t know that not all vehicle inspection stations do unregistered vehicles (blue slips) so check around to find you closest blue slip station. The rms site does list inspection stations and you will see the nes with unregistered inspections mentioned. They will check you bike over and if it passes they or most of them do ctp. Not all ctp's are the same, NRMA annd GIO do have a extra in the ctp for the rider or drive that many dont, if you want coverage in an at fault incident check out those two. At fault incidents, mean if you come a gutser, you are covered for medical. Once you have your blue slip and have chosen a ctp you cn go to the rego place and apply for rego, you will need 3 forms of id to get rego, your drivers licence and 2 other forms of id, lets say water rates and electricity at your address and in your name, then cough up all the coin and away you go.

Hi Dicke,  reading through everyones responses , all sounds about right.
I've rego'd three unregistered bikes , 2 of which being K100's.

Prior to any inspection and legwork , do you have a receipt of sale from the seller, it can be a hand written letter if need be?
you can ride your new investment to your closest RMS (RTA) blueslip station , there should be a few in Newcastle , check online.
Be wary some inspectors do get carried away with their responsibilities , do some research , visit first and chin wag your thoughts. get a feel of how they might be.
Inspector will note frame number and compliance plate details on your blueslip, and check revs. and will carry out some form of roadworthy check on lights , brakes etc.
Next step is obtaining a Greenslip. the choice of provider is up to you as long as you get one . shop around , you will be surprised at variances.
this should then clear the bike for RTA approval.

Documents to present to the RTA will be ,
Your receipt of purchase for one irreplaceable K100 .
Blueslip , noting roadworthiness of bike.
and your greenslip (CTP ) .
hopefully all goes well, and you can continue on with enjoying your new K.

Thanks everyone for your words of wisdom, I think i may need an Aussie slang book for some of the answers though (guster ?  Very Happy )

I have been and purchased a battery today and she started first time. Think I have an air leak somewhere as she she a bit hesitant on throttle. No major smoke and just a few weird noises, but with 100k on the clock i think the old girl is allowed to sound a bit cranky. All looks in order but need some parts before i attempt the mission impossible of getting the thing on the road!

Are there any BMW parts shops you can recommend for me. Need the basics. Fork seals, head bearings and a new dash, or can i get away with a broken speedo and tach?

Brakes work but cant find any brake light switches rear or front? Needs new suspension all round as well.

Dicke,

Gutser. It is what you come. If you go a over t.

Or as the rest of the world say 'fall off'

I had 2 blue slips on my 86 RT.

Stripped it completely of all fairing and added my own lights and mirrors and indicators.
Took it to the local inspection station.
Came back after 4 hours and it had not moved. Was not started and I am sure they did not even turn the key.

If it has a speedo. Pass. If it has a tacho. Pass.

These guys generally do not have a bike licence and have no idea.

Motorworks or Motobins back in the old country is where most head first.

Got the K blue slipped today  Laughing
Just off to pick her up. Looking around for CTP now. Any idea what is a good price for this?
She has had a new set of clocks (UK Ebay 10 GBP), complete brake overhaul, complete front fork rebuild and new 15wt oil (looks like first rebuild in 100k judging by the lack of oil in the forks  Shocked ) . All electrical issues have been rectified ( I lost count after 10) New oil, new coolant, brake fluid and a new front tyre.

I can now start the real job of doing the cafe conversion but think I may treat myself to a few weekend rides.

Good to see you sorted out. Now to enjoy the K feeling. The thing is too now that you have done all those things it should prove to be a very reliable bike.

good to hear you are on top of things with the blueslip.
as much as Newcastle may feel country-fied, we do not receive the same privileges as those west of the mountains. Talking to Rockman recently , his sidecar came in at less overall rego cost than what I pay here in Newie, for a solo LT. apparently the risk of garaging a vehicle in a higher populated area brings greater risk, maybe if they knew that a K had very little appeal in the general populous , costs would decrease.
hopefully there will be a ride we could put together for a test run.
maybe a day ride to meet some of the Sydney Krew , or theres even a few Hunter riders who can be swayed with coffee, just post an invite when you are ready.
keep an eye on the Aussie rides section.

Well all legal now but it did take 4 trips to the RTA. No vin number on invoice, so printed one myself. Then no customer id, which needed a passport. Then the green slip bin was one digit wrong, so a mercy dash to NRMA for a new green slip. On the forth visit all good . Got a good deal with insurance as well. $390 green slip with classic comp insurance for $137. Just a shame i am away for 4 weeks now in Europe.
