Hi, Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm from Cape Town and have recently bought a K100RS 1988. The machine needs some minor attention and it will become a team project for my son and me. I also have a Transalp 700v which is a fantastically comfortable machine and on it I can really explore the mountains and back roads of the Cape. I also have a 2008 Buell Lightning SS. This bike is so much fun going through the mountain passes and twisty bits here. I must admit I "nurse" this one cause I'd like to preserve it. Still vibrates and backfires like any Harley Sportster engine Very Happy
Anyway I hope to learn much from the forum and will keep posting progress on the K100.
Cheers.

as some say ....ride it like you stole it ...and with good tyres , the recommended suspension fixes and good brakes ....you might just be a little surprised at the performance

G'day the Guys from Oz - Thanks for the welcome. I've taken the K and fitted new tyres and have also given it a run through some bends near where I live and was very surprized at the acceleration. The machine responded very well cranking it from 70kph in top gear gaining speed over a short distance to 145kph. In the corners I didn't push too hard seeing the tyres were brand new, but I could see the bike is built to handle well. I first want to go over it carefully and make sure things are in good nick before we start using it regularly. There are a few small oil leaks (tappet cover and what looks possibly like the seal between the gearbox and motor - the odd drop) that I want to sort out. I also want to flush the brake system and service the master cylinders. The previous owner used the machine daily to work and back and didn't really look after the cosmetics. Little things like the water reserve tank under the seat is not fixed nicely in place, the right hand front indicator lens is cracked and taped together.
But like I said it's a project my son and me are looking forward getting stuck into. Cheers.

Greetings Andre, I spent 7 months living on the Garden Route in SA and spent a good deal of time in Cape Town and the roads between Knysna and CT.  I just wish I had a bike while I was there.  You've got some beautiful countryside to explore, I'm jealous!

Good morning from a very sunny Saldanha Bay. I've taken up the position of Construction Manager here for a mega project for the iron ore export facilities. The K-bike has been moth-balled for a while although I've gathered quite a few articles to read when the opportunity is there.
We'll be heading into out Winter here soon and the Western Cape gets quite a bit of rain. Saldanha however only gets about 20% of the annual rainfall that Cape Town gets so you're more likely to get some good Sundays to go for a nice cruise.
Anyway to those up North - get the bikes running and well, us in the South will take our chances. Thanks for all the response and I'll be in contact - especially my mate Jayce in Hilton KZN.

I was wondering if anybody out there has one of those fairings that cover the K-100 radiator. My bike is fitted with the full touring fairing but I'd like to take that off - especially for the hot weather we have here in the Summer. I have seen that in Oz they marketed the "naked" version of the K-bike with a nice surround fairing that went around the radiator and finished off the tank profile very smartly. I have one from a K-750 but they have a smaller radiator shroud. Thanks.
