All,

Hi,  I am David Evans,  first time on this forum. I grew up on the back of BMW motorcycles starting with a 1971 R75/5 which my dad still owns.  I am now riding a 1990 K75RT which I would have been on the back of when my dad test drove it before he bought it new back in 1990.  The bike now has almost 250K and still running strong.  I also have a 'project' 1985 K100 which I am heavily modifying into a 'Kafe Racer'.  I stumbled across this forum when searching for solutions to some of the problems I am running into.

I am located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Cheers.

Dave.

Hi David and welcome to the forum.

Not too long back I decided to see who had a K from new and seems you now also have one. Not very many but there are a few.

Good that you found us, everyone is very helpful and there is lots of good friendly chat and even meet ups.

Some photos will be nice.

Here are some photos for some visual stimulation.  It is a 1985 K100 Kafe Racer build.

Details can be seen at kaferacer.wordpress.com

Here is my 1990 K75RT.  I recently installed the LT electric windshield.  It was a great addition and well worth the effort.

Lifetime Fan, first time poster Dsc06714

Here is the K100RS donner bike.  I got the front end off it, the exhaust and plan to use the engine once I figure out exactly what I need to make it work with the 1985 electronics.  I also have a paralever rear end on route from ebay.  I will need a new transmission, or simply swap my K75 and K100 transmissions as the K75 has the Lug which can be drilled to attache the link.

A Chinook is a helicopter. (Just think Columbia Helicopters)

Salmon, is cat food that comes in a can. What the cat eats when it turns it's nose up at dry food and Tuna (the other cat food in a can).   Shocked

Salmon is also a gay, bright colour that girls like to wear in summer.

I hope this clarifies the issue, for those less well edumacated.   :bball:

Chinook is also a 1655 metre (5430') mountain pass through the Cascade Range of Washington state. The pass provides a sweet motorbike ride to the east entrance of Mt Rainier National Park (Mt St Helen's sister) and carries State Route 410 between the towns of Enumclaw and Naches, not to be confused with....

The Chinook Helicopter is made by Boeing. It started service in 1962 and is still being used today, some 52 years later.

A very unusual incident in Cork. The road roller and the tram are strongly rumoured to have been racing each other................The tram line ran alongside the road. anyone who has ever tried to drive a traction engine with the chain steering will know how 'loose' the steering is and also how 'fast' they are. That same road is now used for speed trials and record attempts. The tram line is ling gone and the road was widened. The story about the tram line was that you could pick blackberries while travelling.

Mountains are female. Isn't it obvious.  Laughing  The Tetons of Idaho are so named because the early French fur trappers were just that little bit lonesome and perhaps enamoured of their feminine projection. Mai oui, don't those passionné French have an imagination...

Pardon the steep veer off course (downhill?), KafeRacer, but this thread has become so US Pacific Northwest....ie, salmon, mountains, snow, Chinook Pass (Washington state), helicopters made by Boeing (founded in Seattle)...

Well, lets move this east a little to a small Island on the western extremities of Europe....:We might be small but we made a few things too......

The modern submarine[edit]
Submarines were not put into service for any widespread or routine use by navies until the early 1900s. The turn of the century marked a pivotal time in submarine development, and a number of important technologies appeared. A number of nations built and used submarines. Diesel electric propulsion became the dominant power system and equipment such as the periscope became standardized. Countries conducted many experiments on effective tactics and weapons for submarines, which led to their large impact in World War I.
Lifetime Fan, first time poster 220px-USS_Plunger%3B0800206
Lifetime Fan, first time poster Magnify-clip
USS Plunger, launched in 1902
The Irish inventor John Philip Holland built a model submarine in 1876 and a full scale one in 1878, followed by a number of unsuccessful ones. In 1896 he designed the Holland Type VI submarine. This vessel made use of internal combustion engine power on the surface and electric battery power for submerged operations. Launched on 17 May 1897 at Navy Lt. Lewis Nixon's Crescent Shipyard in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the Holland VI was purchased by the United States Navy on 11 April 1900, becoming the United States Navy's first commissioned submarine and renamed USS Holland.[14]

And of course the best coffee in the world comes from.....Ireland!!

Although different variations of coffee cocktails pre-date the now-classic Irish coffee by at least 100 years, the original Irish coffee was invented and named by Joe Sheridan, a head chef in Foynes, County Limerick but originally from Castlederg, County Tyrone. Foynes' port was the precursor to Shannon International Airport in the west of Ireland. The coffee was conceived after a group of American passengers disembarked from a Pan Am flying boat on a miserable winter evening in the 1940s. Sheridan added whiskey to the coffee to warm the passengers. After the passengers asked if they were being served Brazilian coffee, Sheridan told them it was "Irish coffee".[2][3]
Stanton Delaplane, a travel writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, brought Irish coffee to the United States after drinking it at Shannon Airport, when he worked with the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco to start serving it on November 10, 1952,[4] and worked with the bar owners Jack Koeppler and George Freeberg to recreate the Irish method for floating the cream on top of the coffee, sampling the drink one night until he nearly passed out.[5][6] The group also sought help from the city's then mayor, George Christopher, who owned a dairy and suggested that cream aged at least 48 hours would be more apt to float.[7] Delaplane popularized the drink by mentioning it frequently in his travel column, which was widely read throughout America. In later years, after the Buena Vista had served, by its count, more than 30 million of the drinks, Delaplane and the owners grew tired of the drink. A friend commented that the problem with Irish coffee is that it ruins three good drinks: coffee, cream, and whiskey.[8]

And the famous British Racing Green.....and we still have road racing in Ireland....for cars and bikes.

Origins of the association[edit]
In the days of the Gordon Bennett Cup, Count Eliot Zborowski, father of inter-war racing legend Louis Zborowski, suggested that each national entrant be allotted a different colour. Every component of a car had to be produced in the competing country, as well as the driver being of that nationality. The races were hosted in the country of the previous year's winner. When Britain first competed in 1902, she had to choose a different colour from the national flag colours of red, white and blue, because those had already been taken for the 1900 race by America, Germany and France respectively. (Italy did not adopt her famous 'Racing Red' until a red Itala won the Peking to Paris race in 1907). Green was well-established as an appropriate colour for the locomotives and machinery in which Britain had led the world during the previous century, and Napier used olive green during the 1902 event, and adopted the colour as its corporate livery.[1]
When Selwyn Edge won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup race for England in his Napier it was decided that the 1903 race would be held in Ireland, at that time a part of the United Kingdom, as motor racing at the time was illegal in Great Britain. As a mark of respect for their Irish hosts[2] the English Napier cars were painted shamrock green. Initially the colour distinction only applied to the grandes épreuves, but was later codified in the Code Sportif International (CSI) of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
In keeping with these Irish/Napier roots, many of the earliest greens used on British racing cars were of a lighter olive, moss or emerald green. Later, darker shades became more common, though there was a return to lighter greens by HWM and other teams in the 1950s

Nest time you are buying tyres.....

The first practical pneumatic tire was made by Scottish inventor John Boyd Dunlop while working as a veterinarian in May Street, Belfast in 1887 for his son's bicycle, in an effort to prevent the headaches his son had while riding on rough roads.

But some famous things went wrong......:

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The RMS Titanic, the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast with Thomas Andrews as her naval architect.

Well, the best beer comes from the Left Coast, USA

Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Arthur Guinness started brewing ales from 1759 at the St. James's Gate Brewery, Dublin.

Something about the year 1776.......

But I don't drink beer so.......but I do like Irish coffee......and if you come over will be happy to make you one, complete with liquid cream floating on top.

Two of them and you're Dublin over.

I wouldn't be too sure about that one. Our family hail from Scotland a few generations back and my dad was a great lover of the bagpipes. There were few Scottish songs he didn't know. He played instruments by ear.

Some time back I got a cd from someone [my daughter] who shares my love of classical [and heavy metal] music and in there was some 15th century Italian bagpipe music which made me very curious as this was rather unexpected. This sent me on a search to find out more as there were some similarities with Irish music but I was more curious as to them being used in classical music, or not used as is now the case. Seems they were quite common in Europe and the Middle East. The thing about the more common of the Scottish bagpipes is that the player inflates them with his mouth. The Irish pipes [Uileann Pipes] are different in that the player uses a bellows which means they suffer less from moisture and air temperature. Some of the Scottish bagpipes do use bellows and they are more haunting. Either way they are a fantastic instrument, especially when paired with an organ. But the folklore suggests the Uileann Pipes were in Ireland before the Scots came.

There was an immense amount of traffic between Ireland and Europe in more ancient times. They are found in the Middle East at 1000BC, from there to Europe and little evidence of them in Europe before 1000AD.

Scotland gave us Robert Burns, one of the best poets ever born, famous for Auld Lang Syne but also many more. Another great Scottish company, Linn Audio, issued a box set of cds, every single one of Robert Burns' works recorded in premium quality by the best of traditional Scottish musicians. Around the same time 'The Transatlantic Sessions' were recorded by the BBC and they are out of this world. If anyone has listened to Mendehlsson's 'Fingal's Cave' its one of the most amazing places in Scotland.

Here is another little nugget. I work in conservation. In south west Ireland we have a small slate quarry at Valentia. Worth a visit if anyone comes on a bike, its just off the Ring of Kerry. When the great municipal buildings were being erected in London in the mid-19th century, Valentia Slate was used extensively. These included the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral and many of the Underground Railways such as Waterloo, Charing Cross, Liverpool St., Black Friars. It was also used in the Paris Opera House.

I think however I am a bit off topic so wont add any more posts here.

It's too late for you.  The fact that you already own 2 Ks is more than enough proof that you belong in this asylum.

I hope you do stay with us. Apart from a lot of good technical information and advice everyone is very helpful with things like swapping parts and even tools.

I admit the forum and the Ks have led to meeting a lot of nice guys with a wide range of interests.
