Hello everyone, I am new to the BMW bike with a recent purchase of a 1990 K100LT with 153,000 km.  I am upgrading from a 1981 Yamaha Seca and I am so looking forward to the long trips on what I hope to be a comfortable ride.  I live in Alberta, Canada so the biking season is still a ways away which should give me time to make sure it's in good running order.  Hopefully I won't be annoying as I will be asking a lot of questions.

Safe riding everyone!
Todd

Hi Todd,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a great buy. You will find all the answers you need on this site...and more besides. Most importantly you will get the answers from people that live, eat and breathe K bikes and know what they are talking about and like talking about it.

It is reassuring to be able to look up how to do a job and note some pitfalls before you start - far better than diving in and hoping for the best. The spares are reasonably easy to get hold of too.

The K100LT is a great bike - great for touring, great for commuting (in all weathers....but maybe not in the depths of a Canadian winter) and great for just getting out and about on. Some turn them into mobile homes by sticking a side car on, others remove the ample fairing, seat and everything else which makes the bike comfortable - what you do with yours is only limited by your imagination. Most importantly, tinker, play, maintain and learn and then get out on the road and ride!

Paul

Welcome Todd. Nice to see another canuck on the forum. If you ever point your bike west and drive until you get to the water, and then drive a bit more, look me up. Also, post some pics. Lots of forum members will put the last 7-digits of their VIN in their signature as well. It often helps the gurus here zero in on the issue and identify parts.

Welcome Canuck!

I had a big smile when you registered to the forum, because it was at the same time that Kyle10 started a thread about the forum invasion by the Aussies.
If you need help, you are only few thousands of kms from my place. Don't hesitate to drop for a chat.
K bikes are still a bit overpriced in Canada, but the reason is that they are indestructible. You made a good choice and you found the right place for help.

By the way, don't drive to see Calamityboy because you will spend the afternoon in his back yard talking about technology/K bikes and drink wine Smile . He`s a good host!

Cheers from Nova Scotia and welcome to the forum.

CF

Hi Ya Todd welcome to our strange corner of the www. There is no such thing as a stupid question just dumb mistakes from not asking questions.
We are only too happy to share our knowledge, there is no purpose to gathering it unless we share, and don't go buying parts till you ask here because the network is world wide and we know where to buy.

The Canadian Cricket team usually puts up a good match in the world cup. If the Winters weren't so snow bound Cricket would probably have a good following but finding a cricket ball in 10 feet of snow would be a challenge even if they are red.

Thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome. I am definitely thinking I found the right forum!

I have so many questions but I think I'll hold off asking most of them until I have a few hours to dig around in the forum.  I also won't post any photos of it until I get it in my garage, it's that new of a purchase - I haven't picked it up yet..... Smile

Thanks again!
Cheers!
Todd

Welcome Todd,

If you have not yet brought your new baby home, was your avatar picture taken by the previous owner in his garage?  If so, there is every chance that your bike was well looked after.  The garage looks very clean and tidy; hopefully that will be reflected in the condition of the machine.

I wish you well on your new bike; Spring has just started here, so hopefully your riding season is not too far away.

Remind me not to try and sneak anything past you guys. ;-)

The avatar picture was indeed taken by the previous owner (it's a good picture) and I noted the state of the garage as well. The bike appeared to be in very good condition considering the age, some things just can't escape the effects of time. Spring in March.... I can only dream... LOL

Safe riding.
Cheers!
