hi everyone, I'm Emmanuel Fiadjoe from Ghana, West Africa. I live in Madina, a suburb of Accra, the capital. I'v been riding for only 4yrs now. My 1st bike was a qlink safari 150, then a cagiva 650, then a honda vtz250, & then a honda nv custom 750. I now own a 07/1984 K589 K 100 RS 83 (0502,0503,0513) Europe, which I bought 3 days ago with vin 0018945. I don't know much about the techs of bikes but i love to use them for long journeys and my daily work schedules in the metropolis (Accra).

Hi Emmanuel welcome to the forum. Its a great bike you have chosen and all the help you will need to keep it in top condition is right here and only a question away.

Welcome Emmanuel. Sounds like you have had a lot on nice bikes in four short years. Now you have a classic that should last you 40 or more . Very Happy

is it normal for the bike to vibrate @ high revs (below redlimit)?

& the speedometer does not work most of the time, when it does even work, it seem to show a gauge far below the speed of the bike.

Probably not normal. Others will point you in the right direction but perhaps a final drive problem as that is where the speedo sensor is.

They do get a vibration around the 4000rpm mark, it can be tuned out of them with balancing the throttles.
As for the speedometer it sounds to me like the same problem I am having which is a bad sender on the rear drive.
Firstly the sender is behind the lower shock mount and black plastic with a single allen head screw holding it in.
Clean any dirt away from the sender then use a 4mm allen key to remove the screw , carefully pries the unit out of the drive with a small sharp driver and clean the face which will most likely be covered in a fine metallic paste, which is usually the problem then reassemble and try.

My speedo sensor slowly died. In my case the wire had come out of the clips in the swingarm and was rubbing against the tire. It got progressively worse as the tire wore through the insulation and then the wire until it finally just stopped. So I would also check that it is secured in the wire clips as well. Cheers.

Welcome too. Nice to see you. The vibration is in all of them and is normal, at about 4,000rpm. If the speedometer is not working 4,000 rpm in 5th gear is 100kmh or 60mph. Sometimes getting the sensor out can be tricky but parts are very available.

Enjoy the K. Not too many of us are likely to get down your way but you just never know.

I am not sure which to recommend but when I got my K100LT I got a Clymer manual with it. I find it excellent and would recommend a hard copy and read it. There are many things in it that you will never do but it gives a lot of information and you would learn much from it and probably learn enough to do some jobs yourself.

The K is actually very reliable but there are a few things to know. Electrical connections can be an issue but in your climate maybe not as much. They are easy to get on line.
