well I thought I would also add a thread on here, if only to remember what I've done for my own poor memory!

long story short, I was given an '88 K100LT that resided in Scotland (I was living in Portugal at the time) and rode it home over the course of two weeks.

first siting in the shed

home in Portugal, looking to get new shoes on 'er

the things I had to do to get by in Portugal, getting the new rubber mounted (saved some dosh by removing my own wheels in the lot, the bike was my only powered transport!)

and some great rides around Portugal.

Now that I've moved home to the states I wanted to replace the big bike with another fast, stable, reliable daily rider. I had given my old GS650G to the same fellow who gave me the K, so I needed something that I wanted to take on longer rides than my trusty '57 BSA

After some time searching I came across this from a non-rider, no tool using fellow who needed a new car

more to come!!

Thanks man!

So on to the new work! The headlights are just placeholders, made from a set of Hella fog lights. They went on within moments of getting it home just to see how they would go. Later they got straightened and the deflectors removed to give better light, but they're still not great.

my 87 LT conversion Bugeye_zpsff12efa8

After that was a final drive oil change, new crush washer. New oil filter and crankcase oil, new air filter, new spark plugs (finally!) and new AGM battery. After unplugging and repluging the under seat EFI unit, and some clean up and insulation of the plug caps, she's running quite nicely.

New horns from EME, as well as the battery and air filter. Lucky me they are just down the road a bit! get to save on shipping and visit when I need things.

With the new lights the dash looked really awkward so thanks to bushyintas' brilliant idea I made some brackets that dropped it a few inches to be right above the lights. It actually stayed directly in the line of sight that it was, so I don't even lose function. It was wobbly as all get-out at first, but a couple of rubber bumpers to help brace it have cleaned it up nicely.
my 87 LT conversion Bracket_zps65603140

added some random old flasher housings that I had lying around, used the inards from the flashers on the fairing bunged in. they won't be some people's cuppa but I like to have signals that are big and visible... if only from the side they matter on!

my 87 LT conversion Newdash_zpsc61220f0

I was worrying about the radiator after removing the fairing and grill, but luck would have it I passed a roadside cleanup that included a few sheets of stretched steel grating, mostly run over when it blew off a truck, but with enough salvageable to cut my new grate. Also added a piece of window screen on the airduct to keep out a few more bugs and leaves...

So I got out today with some early morning sunlight and got some scenery shots in front of the Flatirons by NCAR.

so that's where it stands today. Still want to replace plug caps/wires and add the crash bars that were part of the fairing, paint the front forks and engine at some point, but as she starts and runs ok so far, those are for slow times.

always more to come as I just can't keep my hands off motorcycles!! Wink

Cheers!

Nice job on the instrument bracket, keep up the good work, love the photos.

Just a thought, maybe even drop the headlights even more, just level with the bottom of the triple tree, instruments as well to match, then the lines of the lights will flow across to the tank making it look sleek. Also this will close the gap between the lights and your front mud guard.

the net is to hold the tank on! Shocked   just kidding, its just because I found it in the garage and it is handy to put my gloves under, or if I get something out-n-about that needs to be held in place... Wink

Bushy, that's an idea, I'll see how it goes and if there's a need for bracket V2.0 it may go that way...

Nice work Snowbeard. I like the Colour coded knee pads too. Envious of the trips around Portugal. Would love to get there - maybe the naked k75 will provide the opportunity (if I ever get around to doing it up).

it is nice to have some air flow, although here in Colorado right now the fairing might be nice!!

just to document everything done, I also bought a tap and tapped threads into the holes to fit this POS Japanese mirror that I had laying around. Just saw a whole set of bar clamps on ebay while perusing K100 parts and thought of it!

not too much new, but finally got around to a quick rattle can refresh of some of the black bits that weren't

caught a nice day in CO (not hard to do in fact) and got some pics

my 87 LT conversion Mar2014left_zps8253ed88

my 87 LT conversion Mar2014right_zps867cb237

had to change the brackets I had made for dropping the instruments as they were too light and made things wobble. that's what is poking out under the lights now. I used a random hardbag mounting bracket that I didn't want to cut in order to test it, so V3.0 will have to be found at some point. :-)
