Hi all - on saturday night (8/2) someone "bumped" my 85 K100 RT over whilst parked in the street (and nicked off!), as such I have a smashed righ hand mirror and a 30 cm crack on the right hand side of the upper fairing.

Can anyone advise of a reputable fairing repairer in Sydney and does any one have a right hand mirror for sale (the housing is Ok -  it popped off in the tumble not only after the brake lever smashed the glass).

Many thanks

not the best outcome Warren ,
I had to endure 3am shennanigans from fellow rallyists , one of which stumbled through my site and dislodged my left mirror.
luckily it popped firmly back in place. having had similar issues as yourself with bike drops and cracking of fairings ( anyone else) , PO has used fibreglassing to repair the fairing cracks , and motor dealers have prised open the mirror casing with a screwdriver to replace the glass with normal mirror . both repairs are somewhat questionable.
My question is ; how does one replace the glass without damaging the casing?  is fibreglassing an effective technique for crack repairs in K fairings.

Yes, fiberglass can repair the fairing.  You can even do it yourself.  It's easy - watch a few youtubes on the topic.

I fix stiff from the inside and then let a painter do the filling and painting on the outside.

The secret to mirror repairs...Use the good mirror to cut a template. If that's not possible invite a fellow k rider over for a beer.....with a view to making a template from his K.

A glass shop will cut you a piece of mirror to suit. Ok, the proper mirrors are not in fat flat, they have a very slight curvature. But its only very slight. The remains of the old mirror will pop out....but use a hair dryer on it and it will separate from the backing which you can use on the new one. The glass does actually pop out its on a single ball pivot. Getting it back is not easy, don't lubricate it because if you do the mirror or will keep hopping all over the place and wont stay focussed.

Warren, I have had similar issues with the left mirror on the RT. $5 was the cost to cut and supply a new mirror. I then used double sided tape and silicon to mount it over the remains of the cracked mirror. Good luck.

My LT was repaired that way and it was fine.

You should probably get a coloured or tinted glass too.

Getting it back in is not easy?  Never been an issue for me.  Just press on the center above the ball so as not to stress the mirror glass.

Spit is a good lubricant as it dries up and goes away.

I thought we used the spit and polish on the bike? I should have said don't use an oil based lubricant......Job done for $5 and a bit of spit and polish....

I think it was Charlie who suggested using two cable ties looped around the mirror to pull the mirror out.

That method worked for me.

Paul.

I've damaged my '85 K100RS fairing parts several times over the past 29 years. As a result of my mishaps, I've got a lot of spare fairing parts now, because the parts are easily repairable. Every time the bike got dropped or laid down, it was at least a $1000 to repair if you paid someone else to do the work. I do all my own work now in order to save some of the costs of repairs.

I'm not familiar with the RT fairing, but if it's the same material as the RS fairing, then I'm pretty sure the material is SMC, sheet moulding compound or sheet moulding composite.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheet_moulding_compound

I've read various forums and websites on the topic over the years and the material is often described as fibre-reinforced plastic or FRP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibre-reinforced_plastic

I think FRP is the category of plastics to which SMC belongs. The category is also described as rigid plastic or in the case of SMC, extra rigid plastic. The correct repair procedure for the fairing is that for SMC. There are two types of SMC damage: cosmetic and structural. If you've got cracks, broken or missing material, then you need to perform a structural repair. I've also read where guys have used fiberglass resin for the repair, but that isn't correct for SMC. You need a resin or repair material that's compatible with SMC for an effective repair. There are several companies that make the correct repair materials and some of the best videos I've seen on the topic are linked below in order of preference.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogoPfYD64fQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzAKI5WxJWw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhvH3G-2Ucw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGaF15W3mXA

3M materials for SMC repair:

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Marine/Home/Products/Catalog/?PC_Z7_RJH9U5230GE3E02LECIE20S4K7000000_nid=KJM9992R4FbeQH8HT14PGTgl

I've also seen where SMC cracks are drilled on each end to ensure that the crack propagation is halted similar to cast iron repairs. I think that's a good addition to the repair procedures indicated above.

Another good reference on the topic is How to Repair Plastic Bodywork, by Kurt Lammon, Whitehorse Press. It covers repairing threads and mounting tabs in SMC.

Good luck with your repair.

Regards
