Ask for plastic coated braided stainless leader. 25# test should be good. Make sure it is braided and not solid wire. Get some of the crimp sleeves that are used for making loops in the end of the leader. A couple feet of leader and a pack of sleeves shouldn't cost more than $5. The sleeves are crimped with needle nose pliers.
Stay away from the yacht chandlers. That's where the millionaires shop.
They make them out of snapped halyards off kids sailing dinghies, but yes the fishing shop is a much better idea.
