So my K75 cafe started leaking oil and I want to fix it right, before I sell it. (Bought for building and selling)

I woke up to a big pool of oil underneath it (maybe a quart) after daily use of 3 months.

After I clean up the mess, I put a oil catcher under it. It's still a slow drip.

It's coming from here:

I just changed the oil, filter and oil ring 1 month ago. (500 miles)

Is there a bolt up in there? I can't get an Allen wrench to catch anything.

Thanks!

That is the breather for the chamber between the oil and water pump and if oil is leaking then you need to fix it.
There are quite a few threads on here about fixing it so have a look around and you will be supprised at just how easy it is to do.

There are alternatives, more readily available in the North American market place.

So I finally rebuilt the oil pump...with the suggested parts. Unfortunately, radiator fluid leaked from the seep hole. When the initial leak happened I put a bolt in there to stop the continually leaking.

Just pushed it up in there with fingers. Did I damage the drip path? What can I do? Definitely got water mixing with the oil as I got some heavy white smoke from the pipes during my test run

I would say that the ceramic seal for the water pump has been broken on installation. That will account for the drip of coolant but the white smoke from the exhaust is usually due to water/coolant in a combustion chamber or if the smoke has a bluish tinge then oil in a combustion chamber. Hard to imagine how that would happen when fixing a pump.
The bolt wont have done any harm providing you didn't hammer it in (LOL)

It is common than oil will go thru the oil ring gaps when you rest the bike on the side stand!! it should clear after a couple of miles.

So I am in the process of "freshin up" my 85 RS/RT(now).  Replaced all the fuel lines, all the water lines, fresh seals in tranny, and rear engine.  I know the water/oil pump tends to leak after almost 30 years, and I did the job on my 89 RS already last year, no big deal.

So off I go to redo the 85 pump.  All the seals in, everything looking perfect, new seals, new style impeller, new bolt......wait no bolt like my 89?  Shaft looks a little pitted, but cleaner up nice, this one has a nut on it.....Read the manual, torque to 15.5 #, so set the wrench, slowly work it down and then.....ARRRG
92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) <a href=92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) Originalshaft85-2" />92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) <a href=92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) OriginalShaft85" />
Oh Crap say I, and then more.  No problem, get a new (used one) off eBay.  So I find a complete pump on Ebay, then I take apart the water/oil pump to reveal the below.
92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) <a href=92 K75 cafe oil leak (pics) Replacementshaft1-85" />
Well plan C...take the first one to a machinist, drill out the stud and tap treads into the shaft.  No chance, hardened steel.

Ok plan D...........buy a new one, and of course now new seals, since I had to take the old shaft out.  But I used a generous amount of assembly lube and the old (broken shaft came out pretty easy, with a press.  Think I will set it aside as a spare and use the Ebay case with brand new seals and new shaft.  Oh well if not for Murphy........

You have learned the hard way as I did a few years ago. Mine was not even at the torquing stage, I was just nipping the nut up with a small spanner. My solution at the time was a complete new pump, as a new seal kit and replacement shaft etc. was working out at more than half the price of a complete pump. Anybody thinking of fitting seals to one of these old pumps without replacing the shaft with the later type is only fooling themselves, as the shaft will break at the threaded part, if not straight away, then in the future.

Only if you have the old style with the threaded end, they appear to be rather brittle and always break.  I re-used my old one on the 89 and it worked fine, little steel wool to smooth it out, and this one was alright to re-install, till it broke, so my answer would be wait and see what your shaft looks like.  Unless it is the threaded kind, then order a new one, ouch!

I did the same as Avenger GT; it was more practical to buy a complete new pump assembly than pay half as much for the parts. That way you get a brand new oil pump as well.

If you're planing to keep the bike long term, then that's the best option. IMO.

Paul.

I just bought a used engine and I was thinking of an oil/water pump service to be on the safe side but considering the whole motor cost me with transportation 300 euros it might not be worth to do anything before I put it on the bike, (oil pump service, cam chain, piston rings ,gasket, valve sims might cost as much as 500euros affraid ) I think I just add oil , a new oil filter and and cross my fingers.....then again I  think of Murphy....

You can repair the pump later with engine in frame, but leakage from clutch area could be solved only with engine dissasembled from gearbox. My mistake was to mount the engine without checking it, so my recomendation is:

1. change the seal on transmission shaft (gearbox side)

2. check the friction plate and change O ring behind the clutch assembley

Easy and not expencive

Yes they are not expensive items but a lot of work to replace them when it could have been easy.
