i have fitted a brand new battery on my k 100 rt. in the last two weeks i,ve developed an electric power drain on the battery. the battery is drained and three cells of electrolite have been lost.
my local garrage cannot find where the power is being taken from any suggestion.

Have you checked the layered electriacl schematic?

Hi Les, well you are going to need to learn and now is the time! First when you have a fully charged battery what is the current drain in amps or milliamps that you have measured and if you have not measured it please do so and let us know how much it is.

Next as you are measuring the current draw pull out your fuses one by one and replace those that make no change until you see a change in the current draw, write down the fuse number that caused the change and leave that one out and then pull the remaining fuses on by one putting back those that make no further change. Let us know which fuses caused a change in current drain from what to what and on which fuses. Report what you found. Did this problem happen only when you fitted the new battery?

thanks need to get a amp metre. and no it happened on the old battery and the new one. what metre do i buy?. its drawn 3 cells dry do you think it could be over charge ? if i use a fully charged battery from my car and put the leads on to start it after 3 times it runs down my car battery so major draw somewhere.

Hi Les,
If you connect it to your car battery is there a hefty spark as you connect it to the bike? (I am assuming you have taken the bike battery out of the bike and only are only using the car battery?)

If it is flattening a car battery with three starts you do indeed have a heavy drain but that should give you a big fat spark when you touch the lead onto the bike battery lead terminal before you push the start button. Is your car battery a good battery? Does it go flat with three starts in your car? When you say it has drawn three cells dry do you mean the electrolyte is way down on just those three cells or are they the worst but all of the cells have gone down in level as well.

To answer your question about a meter to buy if you are flattening a battery with three starts and you are drawing a big spark when you touch the battery terminals onto the bike then don't try to measure it with a meter, most home meters only go up to about 10 amps unless you have an old car ammeter around and some of them go up quite a bit higher.

I know it seems like questions questions but we will get to the bottom of it.

car battery good. only the 3 cells dry of electrolyte these next to the neg terminal same on the old bike battery. battery stil in bike just using car battery with jump leads to start bike.

Is the bike battery still in circuit? If so you need to get it out and check why only 3 cells had the drying out. Did you ever see the cells all full or did you not unreasonably take it on faith the shop had topped all up properly?

was present when electrolyte put in and its was the same on the old battery. booked into garrage on tues doing my head in.

Sometimes it takes a while for the electrolyte to seep down inside the battery cases as some have small clearances.

What does not make sense is with a new battery to lose electrolyte from only three cells. If the bike was overcharging all cells would experience an approximately equal drop due to overcharging removing the water.

If there was a high discharge current again all cells in the battery would be affected roughly equally not just 3 of them. Tell us what happens on Tuesday.

hi even stranger is that its the same 3 cells next to the neg. on both batterys. will let you know what the garrage says if indeeed they know.

Hi Les,
Just a thought did you check electrolyte level was the same in all cells so as to have a baseline in future checks? I know my battery has a white case with a line on the side but I have never been able to see the level from the outside and I have tried all sorts of lights shone from all directions including down from the top through the open top up holes to no avail.

i take baterry of put on level ground and check level seems ok at mo. its a matter of how long it lasts
