Hey Y'all, Wow its been awhile since I've been here...spent the latter part of the summer in Colorado on a dude ranch ridin 4 hoofs instead of two

wheels...almost as much fun! Then between workin and ridin two wheels as often as I can I haven't been in front of my computer much at all. Well

yesterday after coming back from a nice ride with friends and putting the bike up on the center stand I stepped outside the garage to kiss me bride

and when I turned back to get my helmet I see a stream of gear oil running done the floor. by the time I unsuited and got down to look it had stopped

run out so I'm not sure where it was coming from but near the center stand. :ang:Have to say I have been pushing this old gal pretty hard lately not

wanting these young guys on their crouch rockets to get the best of me. So any ideas what might be going on. I looked thru 19 pages of threads but

came up empty.  Anybody got any wisdom to share?

Most likely culprit is the rubber cover on the clutch pushrod. They do split:

Thanks for the replies ... checked the boot and its dry and in good shape...bout 16mos old. Wish I could take a pic and post but my camera on my phone is dead... will see if I can grab my wife's tonight. Looking up and towards the front of the bike just beyond the center stand bracket is a hole about a 1/4 inch... can't feel any threads but it looks like it might of had a plug of sorts in it... dang wish I could get a pic up for you.

While we're on the subject of gear oil...if someone could share the dimensions of the transmission fluid gauge that would be most helpful!

Does this help?

She sprung a leak K1100LT%20%28222%29-L

The hole may be the drain in the centre of the lowest part of the case.

If oil is coming from there it's one of three things:

The clutch shaft O-ring, the output-shaft seal between the clutch carrier and the crankcase or the gearbox input-shaft seal.

None are that hard to fix just a fair bit has to come off to get at them.

Unfortunately you won't know until you get the clutch out but the most likely culprit is the O-ring.

None should cause a catastrophic failure in the short term. The worst is clutch contamination resulting in it slipping.

Ok going forward on the bike what that whole piece attaches to is where this hole is.

Oops, I see it now...that hole is at the bottom center of the piece you just posted...at the risk of sounding dumber than a box of rocks...what is that in the pic?

It's the Trans Michigan.  Laying on the face that mates with the engine.

The first thing to do is determine if it's motor oil or gear oil.  Gear oil smells like sulfur(rotten eggs.)

Motor oil: Engine rear main seal or clutch nut O-ring.

Gear oil: Trans input seal or the seal at the back of the clutch pushrod.

You're so right...no mistaking gear oil...not anything I'd want to use as an after shave!

Can anyone tell me what the little hook at the end of that gizmo is used for? I made one with a flat end and no hook, feel left out now.

It's the C-spanner for the rear spring strut adjustment.

Hi there, I don't have the c spanner, so I made the oil marks on a allen wrench.
Best regards.

The thing to remember and be wary of is when you do make one just make sure the L shape at the top will prevent it from falling into the gearbox.  don't ask and I wont have to say I am not telling how I know that.

I have a friend who says that the only reason we learn from our mistakes is to recognize them next time we make them.
