Is there an election on the 14th?

Oh well. Guess I better stay home then and vote. Just a shame the new Prime Minister is going to be Tony Abbott.

Cheap if you are solo, another matter if you have a sidecar...... but funny thing....you are down under, so upside down you are already right hand drive.....but in fact cars in Italy are left hand drive, because they drive on the right....... I mean supposed to drive on the right.

Why not containerise a few bikes, land them in some major port like Rotterdam or London and fly up to collect them. You could enjoy some nice roads down to Rome. Trip of a lifetime. ....

In truth you can do London to Rome with one or two overnight stops but why not take time and enjoy it....

I believe its free for solo models.

Combinations are special order......but Italians drive on two wheels anyway, even if it comes from the factory with 3 or 4 wheels.

about 3,000 miles 3-4 weeks.

That's a good route, takes in anyone coming from Roscoff Cherbourg or St Malo....Calais to Rome can be done with 1 overnight stop....if you take your K on the motorway and let it run free but stay legal.

Keeping fingers crossed.

But add in Naples and Pompeii.....

It would be nice if some of those who intend to come are going to take the ferry from Bari or Ancona to Bar (Montenegro) or Dubrovnik, Split or Zadar (Croatia)... And maybe add a visit to Bosnia too.

I will be bringing the oldest one, the K100RS 8V, the K1 has no luggage space and I can't afford to buy the special panniers, the K100 16V is a bit sick at the moment. As the K was launched as an 8 valve it is probably the best one to bring. I am looking forward to meeting up in Rome

I Have just been looking at the long range weather forecast for France & Italy.
After 2nd Sept France is OK Cloudy but warm.
France & Italy have rain thunderstorm on 7/8/9 Sept but should be into Italy by then where it is less of a problem.

Then good weather for the rest of September everywhere.

So I am going for it.

Any one wanting to join up on route please send a PM to discuss.

I had given a thought to going via Roscoff but that's not a good forecast for that option.

about 3,000 miles 3-4 weeks.
I was looking at your map, and to reach Millau you have an alternative route going by Clermont-Ferrand.
From Clermont-Ferrand, you will take the FREE highway (very rare in France).
This route will take you through the massif central were you will be riding along the volcano chain of Auvergne and the plateau du Larzac.
I am not a fan of highways, but this one is to my opinion the nicest. You are riding between the mountains and the view is simply stunning. On the top of that, the road is very smooth and speed limit is mostly 130km/h.  Le Mans to Millau, is a 670kms trip and it takes only about 6 hours.

If you are considering taking any toll highway in France, be ready to spend a lot of money. They are privately owned, and the rates are refereed by French people as Highway robbery. You can find the rates here

I took the car to Budapest last year, Cherbourg to Strasbourg and then Strasbourg to Roscoff. over €100 in tolls, but quick. if I make it its either Cherbourg to LeMans or Roscoff to Niort on a route I know well. Rome is a trip of a lifetime I guess. Just means 2 weeks off work and I won't know if that's ok for another week or two so it would last minute.

Hi all considering this trip.

I have booked into the Rome campsite for arr 13th leave 16th.

Will start form UK 2/3/4th Sept (have not booked ferry yet but quotes are £20 each way)

My proposed route will be either Calais/Troyes/Lyon/Millau and then on to Rome or if any wish to join me I can easily change it to Calais/Le Mans etc. Thanks to the Crazy Frog post I will be going down the free autoroute in the middle either from Lyon or Le Mans.

My first day will be autoroute (Note Motorcycle tolls half of car tolls so not too bad) after that will slow down and deliberately do twisty / scenic bits.

I plan do go camping as I have borrowed a large tent from my daughter and am taking a inflatable mattress for comfort.  I was going to go B&B but this is cheaper. I will be planning stops only 2 days in advance of each one.

Hope some of you will come.

I am booked into campsite as well for the  nights of the 13th and 14th, I also have not planned very much yet but will not be going through France. I will PM you closer to departure time and we can maybe meet up in Italy or in the worst case in the camp site.

If you go by Le Mans to Millau you will get the scenery.  If you go by Troyes to Lyon, you will go across the Beaujolais/Burgundy region and you will get drank. You cannot ride there and not stop to taste the wine...Italian Meet 13-15 September 2013 in Rome to Celebrate the Birth of the K-bike 292303 Italian Meet 13-15 September 2013 in Rome to Celebrate the Birth of the K-bike 44271

Anybody crossing France should contact me with their itinerary. In case of problem I can find French K100 riders to provide assistance. Just in case...

I can also post on French forum to see if anybody is going the same route and want riding mates, fellows, buddies...

This is right, Lyon is the capital of the gastronomy in France. Choice will be difficult as I just checked and they have only 1474 restaurants Twisted Evil.
