Welcome Darren!.......and congrats with your purchase.

When you got the problems sorted out, you would have a bike would run in many years.....if it`s not to much neglected...and depending on the work you put down now, before putting it back to the street.

We`re all waiting for your questions.........

Welcome to the forum.
There's a sizeable group of K bike owners in Ireland and we have had a couple of meet ups this year with more planned for 2013. Check out reports and photos on the 'Trips' section.
There's nothing wrong with your K that can't be fixed.
Ask plenty of questions and post what you find.
You'll get plenty of advice and tips on what to look for.
From what you've said so far, my money is on the fuel pump too.
Open the fuel cap and listen for the pump whirring when you press the starter button.
No whirring and the pump is stuffed. (or the filter is blocked)
If it is the pump, there are plenty of (cheap) alternatives mentioned on the forum.
You'll soon learn that K owners don't spend much money if they can help it.

Hi Darren,

Welcome to THE K bike forum!

Not so far from you....in Cork.

I think this started as more of technical site but it has a great social side to it. You wont want another bike after the K.

A Clymer manual is an essential, if you have not got one you should be able to pick one up on eBay. Mine came with one.

When I got my K I did a full service on it, all filters, including fuel filter, changed brake fluid, brake pads, spark plugs and coolant, transmission oil. I am aware problems can arise if it is left sitting for a long time with petrol in the tank.

K Bike is a bit like a Meccano set, looks complex but comes apart very easily.

Watch out too for perished fuel lines between the petrol tank and the fuel rail. The relays [lots of them] etc are under the petrol tank which must be lifted out of the way to access them. The correct BMW fuel line cost me €20 from BMW and I relpaced them with longer ones which now means I can lift up my petrol tank to access the relays without having to depressurise and disconnect the fuel lines. I also located the new jubilee clips so I can disconnect them if I have to without removing fairing parts other than one knee pad and storage compartment.

Starter motors can do funny things but they are very very easy to access [two allen bolts and remove battery] and strip down to clean and check brushes.

Exhaust manifold nuts and studs can be a problem, be careful if you are trying to remove the exhaust. A few instances of them shearing off, nasty little problem to sort out.

www.motorworks.co.uk is a great source of spares, new or second hand at very reasonable prices, if you phone them you will find them extremely helpful and delivery is prompt. If you have any technical matters put them up here as everyone is very helpful and will usually identify the problem quickly. If you can pop up a photo, year and frame no and you will be quite surprised at the level of help offered.

We have had some nice meets during the year and are hoping for a long one next June weekend with Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula planned. I like to take a run most weekends, weather permitting and quite happy to travel down your way. You have a local member in Kerry, HoverK100 but he wont be much good to you on wheels or brake issues as his K is somewhat unique. He is hoping to join us for the June weekend trip too.

Look up the posts in the European Section under Irish Eccentrics and etc etc and you will get a feel for the site!

well thanks so much all for your advice and help ive checked relays theres a clicking when i try to start it fuel pump relay i believe took fuel line off hit starter switch and no fuel through pipe so i believe it is indeed the pump now how will i get it out very hard to access the screws in the tank ive read of peole dismanteling pump and repairing?

A common problem related to a non running fuel pump is the connector to the tank.

Have you checked that connector, and if you got power to it?
When pushing the starter button you should have ~12V+ at the green/white wire,
and check fuse #6.

BTW. It`s no problem to hear the fuel pump when it`s running, so it`s not needed to disconnect the fuel hose to check..........

.........we did have someone which had to use his fire extinguisher just a few days ago....when checking for fuel pressure.

Am I right in thinking three relays avtivate when you hit the start button:

Load shed relay

Starter Relay

Fuel pump relay.

Darren first check that you have power to the fuel pump, those connectors under the tank can come undone if someone tried to move the tank. Mine are at the rear right hand side, got four individual wires. From memory there is white yellow green and brown.

There is also an earth for the petrol tank, mine is on the left hand side. You might need to check these. Either way though the fuel filter should be changed and if the bike was sitting a long time the pump may not be the best.

When you turn on the ignition you should hear a continuous click click as opposed to a single click, before you press the starter. Check for that and post up the outcome.

When you press starter, and have lights turned on, lights should temporarily go off [load shed relay and starter relay, both activate]. Do the lights go out? [load shed relay?]Again do post up the outcome. Must be ok as starter is turning over.

Starter should then also turn over [starter relay or starter brushes?]. [Starter is turning over].

Check wiring to fuel pump [no fuel presumably means no power to fuel pump, or blocked filter] under the fuel tank. Worth simply opening the connections and then closing them again. [try this one, you have to disconnect it anyway to remove the tank]

Check fuel filter but replace anyway. [common problem] Inside the tank, very large hands wont make it in

One other thing too, how good is the battery? Some other posts here seem to suggest that below a certain voltage not everything works right.

Hi Darren welcome to the forum. Lots of good advice on the fuel pump there but when it comes to getting it out there is an easy way.
There are 2 tags either side of the plastic ring, you dont need to undo the 8mm bolts while inside the tank. You can see on the picture and all you need to do is a finger and thumb on each of the tags and squeeze and wriggle the pump and it should lift out. Being old the rubber vibration damper may stick to the aluminium so you may need to be a bit forcefull.

Hello Darren and welcome to the forum - pretty much all the information you need to get your K up and running again can be found here somewhere. I visited Tralee with my then wife some years ago and was dismayed by the state of the place. It turned out that the "Rose Of Tralee" contest had happened the day before and that explained the state of disarray in the place. We were welcomed warmly though everywhere we went in your beautiful country Wink

Hi Darren, in Tralee? I'm just up the road in Barrakilla!! As said already I don't have any wheels or brakes or steering or gears or lights or suspension on my K but I do have most engine electrical/fuel parts in my shed and have a little experience of K engines and why they won't run Very Happy. I'd be delighted to give you a hand to get yours running. Also did you know there are a few parts nearby?

Just came across this idea of a meet up by accident. Definitely need a new thread.
Was thinking of something like it myself.
I had in mind lunch in Stradbally Fayre on New Years Day.
We can then look forward to the Spring.
Ruffy tuffy motorcyclists only need apply!

Do you see a flow of fuel inside the tank (from the return line) when you push the starter button?

If you do, then it`s probably the injectors that don`t receive any signal.....or power.
But the first mentioned is most likely, since they got power from the same relay as the fuel pump.

Injectors might be blocked and/or faulty.
Another thing to check is the plug going into the injection control unit. Bad connection is a well known issue especially if it's been sitting for a while
Seems unlikely that all of the injectors would be blocked or faulty at once.
As a K owner, always try the simple or cheap options first.

Darren,

I am not the most expert but maybe if you are still in trouble I might invent an excuse for a run to Tralee if I can squeeze it in...

I have to do my son's bike Saturday, service kit only arrived yesterday and he is coming home Friday expecting his bike to be ready and running. I am hoping it wont take long. I know his oil filter wont come off, tried to loosen it but at least its the metal canister type and is accessible.

As ComberJohn said try the simple things first. Losing fuel in all 4 injectors at one time statistcally is less likely than an electrical lack of supply or signal problem.

Silly question, but what happens if the fuel pump polarity is reversed? The connectors normally work only one way but if they were altered by a previous owner.....

I wonder could it be ECU? I changed mine due to an erratic fault and still have the old one. A big issue is the electrical connections generally and the site is full of notes on these.

If you get sorted too we are discussing a meeting on Saturday 29 December....brunch at Stradbally Fayre [10km off the M7 at Portlaoise] seems to be appearing on the agenda. Seems to be good interest.....

Good point, Olaf, you thread hijacker.
If it's not an original pump it may be worth checking the pump polarity.
It's impossible to get it wrong with the original due different size connectors, but a double check can't hurt.
Remember, cheap stuff first!

Hi Darren,

I'm a bit behind on my forum inputs...pressure of real work and all that, so a belated welcome along and good luck with the bike.

As ComberJohn said there's nothing that can't be fixed and it's a real thrill when you do get it going. I have a resto/Light rennovation thread going myself but it's all stopped these past couple of months, hopefully I'll get going over the winter with a stripdown and geabox seal job.

Keep the questions coming and the guys will never be shy about mucking in with answers.
