I completed the refresh of my 1985 K100RT this week. I say refresh because I didn't rebuild the engine, but just replaced the outer seals. All mechanical and electrical components were removed, disassembled and cleaned. All told I spend $6,500 on parts, paint and powder coating with me doing all the work. Needless to say I didn't realize I spent that much until I added it up today! In the end however the bike looks and runs great. I've put about a 1,000 miles on it since I finished the mechanical work.

Time to sell it and look for the next one:)

Some of the new parts include: Windshield, mirror glass, seat, fork springs, shock, clutch, engine/transmission seals, all radiator and fuel hoses, speedometer transmitter, gear sensor, brakes, brake disk, tires, fuel and air filters, BMW emblems, all rubber parts and much of the hardware, control cables and much more.

Painted: Full Fairing, radiator cover, mirrors, fenders, tank, side panels, tail (seat) unit

Powder Coated: Frame, handle bars, radiator cover, fork tubes, engine covers (3), foot peg mounts, battery box, BMW engine logos, engine guards, lift handle, center stand, Fuel injector rail, fuel cap

I have real limited room and need the space to start the next one. We'll see:)

I actually painted it a red used on an American Ford pickup. It has less brown than the Baja. The color was FX Merlot Red.

The windshield is from a company called Clearview Shields (http://www.clearviewshields.com/) and the vent has 5 positions from fully open to fully closed. Really nice feature in the heat.

Excellent work there and it does look brand new.

So.....number 7020 on a street somewhere in Alabama eh?

Can't be too hard to find.
Me and the boys will be around shortly to 'pick it up'

A real credit to you Darryl now instead of selling it use the $6500 for the next bike to go on an extended tour and keep it. Even if you do have to extend the lounge room for more bikes.Very Happy

In spite of the fact that he has $6500 in it, similar to my 85 K100rs refresh project (not to mention his months & months of hard labor), unfortunately, he's very un-likely to find any buyers who will give him more than 1/2 that amount for it. There are literally 1000's of these available in USA for less than $2000.......some of them quite nice with relatively low mileages.
His is indeed VERY nice, I would say WAY better than mine.........I'll be interested to hear how much money it brings.
Hopefully it will draw out that special buyer who has big cash and appreciates the fine workmanship.
Regards, Ibjman

Appreciate all the kind words on the bike. I'll post it online for 2 weeks to see if I get a taker, but at the end of the day I'm sure I'll end up keeping it. It really is a great bike to ride!

I'll also be starting the search for the next 85 to do a naked version. I think it'll look great.

Very nice job. It looks great.

If I may add, the addition of top box and large windscreen classifies it as an LT. RT's are the more sporting version built between '85 and '88 then replaced by LT's in 1989.

Enjoy.
