Can you guys tell me if the lower fairing (see attached photo) will fit my 85 RT? If so, where might I find one? Thanks in advance!

You can still buy the belly pan in pieces (all mounting hardware and primed plastic) from BMW. They have them in the German warehouse still, but for major bucks. It will fit your RT. I have been looking for one for my RS for yonks. I'll arm wrestle you for it if you find one.

If you try to search a used engine spoiler (hard to find) but they show up now and then.

It`s two versions, 2V and 4V.
I would prefeer the 2V, as the bracket is easier to remove when needed.
The 4V bracket using the same mounting point as the lower LHS fairing on the RT.

The cutout for the exhauster is also smaller on the 2V engine spoiler.

That`s the 2V version......not exactly mint condition, and mounting parts missing.

I priced out the bits from der Vaterland the other day, factory BMW belly pan in prime and all necessary bits for mounting, at just over Five Hunnerd US Greenabacks, my cost from the dealership where I'm currently engaged in gainful employment. Too much for what you get, But to the right person, and a bike that's resto quality...that's small change compared to what you'd spend to resurrect a secondhand one from a boneyard or private sale.

actually it did not tell the whole story. It is mine, from a barn find that I am riding. Selling some of the stuff I'm not going to use. I probably have the mounting bolts.

Thanks everybody! Ridefar, is the condition of the one you have something that could be refurbished? It's fiberglass, right? Or is it plastic?

Ridefar, I placed a bid, we'll see what happens. Would appreciate as much hardware as you can find for it. Any chance you have a good headlight that would fit my RT, mine has a rock chip in it. Thanks!

It`s not fibreglass. It was some kind of hardened foam material.
I think it was pressure molded polyurethan foam, but I`m not quite shure of that.

hmmm, not familiar with making repairs to that type of material, and it looks like it needs some.

hey wngnut,
I will try and find any of the hardware for that belly pan. I do not know what material it is. It is not fiberglass. I thought it was plastic but IngeK seems to be right about these K models quite often. You may find that its not in as bad as one might think. And I don't think these things are easy to find.
I do not have a headlight.
Thanks for the bid.

A friend of mine owns a body shop, so I can get some advice from him on getting it to look good and match my color. Thanks for checking on the hardware.

I have one of these that I'm putting on an 85 rs. The mounting bracket is bolted to 2 rubber threaded cusions on the left side and has 2 rubber grommets on the right side that slide over 2 threaded studs that stick out of the right side of the oil pan threaded holes front & rear. Once the bracket is mounted up it has some "vibration room" to kinda "float" on the rubber mounts & grommets.

When I got the bracket, the left rear nut insert was missing from the spoiler mounting hole as like I've seen on other used examples. I welded a nut on the inside of that hole to match the other 3.  My question is: Should there be a nut in that hole to bolt the plastic spoiler to or some kind of additional bracket?

When my spoiler is bolted up, the left rear corner seems abnormally "spingy" (up & down movement).....as if it could use an additional support bracket to something on the engine on that corner.

I considered building an additional "stiffener bracket" to support the L/R corner.......perhaps anchored to the #4 header pipe flange studs.

I should note that when I  received the bracket used, there was a cut-out area in the bottom left rear of the mounting bracket (probably for a curved down header pipe- clearance)?  I welded a sheet metal patch in the cut out area......perhaps that needs to be better re-inforced to avoid the up & down "flex" in the left rear.  Do other people experience this same movement at the left rear of the spoiler/bracket? If so, has anyone developed a fix to make the left rear corner stiffer?

This is how a unmodified 2V bracket look like at LHS.
(I`ll guess that yours have been used on a 4V earlier).

Thanks for your reply & photos. It looks as I had imagined mine should. Because I was a little unhappy with the up and down movement at the left rear, I went ahead and installed a stand-off bracket to that corner mounting bolt running back & up to an unused threaded hole on the bottom rear of the cylinder head. Rock solid now.

Worked on mine yesterday, finally. Removed all the old paint and filled in a few bad spots. I think it's ready for primer and paint. Test fitting was done last week-end. Can't wait to get it finished.

That hole is used to mount the bracket on the 4V models,
which have a different bracket due to the headers needs more space.
