I have just returned from my first long trip on the 87K100RS. Aside from a little leak at the master cylinder of the front brake all went rather well.
My boots have a thick 3/4"(20mm) sole and I felt a little crunched in the cockpit - it would be nice to have a little more leg room.
I've been looking at this type of thing (below) - probably something that I can fab myself - unless others amongst you have better ideas.

The other issue was heat management. 106F in the cockpit, coming across Death Valley early am.
I've read Crazy Frogs paper. My issue is that the fairing is after-market with large gaps between the tank/engine and the fairing. I'm thinking about adding on some extra fairing pieces as it is only ABS plastic.

The bike did just fine @ 47MPG (US) at 75mph.

I had one scare between Ely and Tonapah (167miles). I was motivated to get home and after some spirited riding into a head wind, the reserve light came on at 137miles. Not wishing to become a pedestrian in the Nevada desert, I trimmed some speed and squeezed the handle-bars tightly to eek out the last drop of fuel.

Some 30 miles later I pumped 4 gallons. How much fuel does the tank really hold? Is the reserve only 4ltr or is that very conservative?

If the bike's a California model (due to the filler neck and emissions plumbing, though that could be external) there might be less than the 22 litres (5.8 gallons US) advertised. The total includes the reserve. On my bike at least, the light always comes on right on 4 litres remaining. I have squeezed 21.8 litres into it and it was still running, on a trip to the Top End of OZ two years ago. I rolled into Katherine behind a four-trailer road train. I'd been following him for nearly eighty kilometres in his tailwind. I reckon he didn't know I was there. It was a thriller not to be repeated.

I was behind him and the rest of the group, bar RT, coming up the hill fast towards the stop sign, and wondered why he was hanging off the edge of the seat like the bike was on invisible rails that he had to fight against, then he'd lean to the other side. It was all quite strange. I'd never seen that sort of moto acrobatics done before. Charlie is a true ground breaker! We pissed ourselves with laughter when we learnt what he was attempting. How much petrol did you get in there that day, Chazza?

i had planned to fill up at boonah , as i haddnt topped the tank right the way up on initial fill out of brissy , i guess i could have put another 2 litres in there at that time .

i guess i was predicting that the others would fill up too ,,,but they had already done so at aratula .

that and the 8 % incline and my version of fuel pump fix (sits just a little bit higher ) left all the fuel at the back of the tank ....

so good to see smiling faces ,,,,embarassed no ...just doing what needed to be done...

One (US) gallon of four quarts equals 3.785 litres so that's a fair bit of remaining fuel to drink up when the warning light comes alive. At that stage you've gone through 18 litres or 4.75 US gallons in the old money. If you give these girls some stick they will chew through the juice pretty fast. If I recall correctly some US models have a nasty fuel filler nozzle restrictor (for nozzle size and/or vapour recovery?) which might take up some vital petrol space.

Ta, Inge. That's right, and we used to drill a small hole or two near the top of the 'funnel' portion so that it would ventilate and fill more readily so we didn't have to wait for it to find its own level.

I remember when leaded gasoline was being phased out in "Murica", and Canada too, during the late '70/early '80s and at the service station there'd be two different nozzle sizes and respective filler neck openings (smaller for unleaded) so you couldn't introduce leaded fuel (the larger nozzle) into your catalyst-equipped car, bike or pickup truck.
