I have a question regarding Crankcase Ventilation. Last summer, I noticed a small amount of oil residue around the third air intake nearest the Crank Ventilation hose (K75). I was looking the K over the other day and noticed that there is now a little bit of residue around all three air intake tubes. What causes the crank to spew oil out the ventilation hose? I don't overfill the engine oil, I normally start at ~3/4 (halfway between the dot and upper limit).

Scott,

I maybe simply the oil vapor.
Is you bike using an abnormal amount of oil?
The crankcase is always under positive pressure and even it the oil doesn't go up the vent hose, the air is always saturated with oil vapor.

Here is just an experience for everybody.....
Do you know what is happening if you have an air leak on the engine?
Just run the bike on the idle, and open the oil fill up cap.
Your engine will die or run like crap.

"Is your bike using an abnormal amount of oil" Through last summer, I would have to say no. The oil level would drop from 3/4 to just above the center dot and stay there. With that said, the last oil change in~oct, the oil level did seam to drop with each drive more than I expected, but it still stopped and hovered at the center mark.

"the air is always saturated in oil" Ok, I have only had this bike for the last 13k kms and 10 were last summer. Maybe the previous owner kept this area cleaned and it's not a new or unusual problem. I was wondering if something could cause an increase in the crank pressure and what it could be.

"Do you know what is happening if you have an air leak on the engine?

." No, I don't know. Will removing the oil cap reveal and air leak or lack of?

People don't realize that crankcase air vent hose has a tendency to dry and crack over the years. Removing the oil cap will just show you the implication of an air leak. This is only for information but it's quite amazing how it affects the performance of the engine.

By the way your picture is still the #1 on this forum, and I saw people on other forums using it as their avatar.

looks cleaner than mine. On my K the intake near the battery has a lot of oil residue on it. Much more than the 3 towards the front of the bike

Thanks for the reply guys.

I guess I will try a new vent hose, clean it up and see if it clears up. I have a couple of other odds & ends to do as well. Like the rubber vacuum protection caps. You can't see in this photo, but the middle one (center of photo) is cracked so badly I can't believe it is not leaking yet.
