I took the stupid rattling heat shield off yesterday, and found what may be the cause of my exhaust leakage.
Does anyone have any idea why these cuts would be on top of the pipe? I am going to plug them up anyway.

they are where one of the heat shield mounting brackets used to be welded.

at least an explanation I can live with. Now to find something that will plug them up, I've no access to a Stainless welder. Meantime I just can't afford to stop anywhere in case I go to sleep.

A quick fix would be a product called Pratley Putty Steel . It will seal the two small holes but wont stop the rattle ! I dont know if Pratley products are available in Aus.?

rt is there exhaust shop close to home they should be able to weld it up for you

I went to a custom exhaust shop nearby. They were easily able to fill similar holes and cracks with weld material.

I did a temorary fix with a dab of high-temperature silicone.

It held for a looong time.

I would personally build a stainless steel bracket for the heat shield.
After that you have 2 solutions:
You have the bracket welded on the exhaust or you drill 2 small holes in the exhaust and you screw the bracket over the 2 gaps. If you use stainless steel screws, they should last for at least 10 years.
