Hi Guys. I'm brand new to this forum stuff and I'm also brand new to bikes but I came across my k100rs for a price that I couldn't pass up. So now it's time for work. It hasn't been started for about 6 years so where do I start??? I would like to get it going before I restore it and I have restored a few cars before so I'm not to bad on the tools. Any suggestions with what I should do to attempt to start it after soooo long would be great.

Change all fluids...oil, oil filter, forks, gearbox, final drive, air filter, brake fluid etc.

Dump the existing fuel in the tank, change the fuel filter and while you're there, check the condition of the fuel lines. If they need replacing, use SAE30R10 type fuel lines (this type can be immersed in fuel). Check the fuel pump...it has a black rubber "vibration dampner" to help hold it place in the tank. Sometimes that black rubber can turn into a thick black glob. Especially so if it has been sitting in any fuel that has ethenol. Check the other fuel lines on the bike. Don't forget to use hose that is suitable for fuel injection.

Check/clean your injectors to see how they're performing.

Spark plugs...change them.

Make sure the battery is fully charged when trying to start it, otherwise there is a chance that the starter relay can weld its contacts together...and it'll keep on turning the motor over until you disconnect the battery!

Apply DeoxIT to every electrical connection/bulb/socket/switch on the bike. No, I do not have shares in the Company.

That's the main ones, no doubt the "collective" will chime in with more.

Fix it, ride it.

People will think you are a nut case because of the stupid grin on your face.

Welcome to the forum Steve, i think Blakey has covered most need to stuff.

The only other thing i would suggest is the spline lube on the drive shaft(you will find plenty of info for it on here). You could also do the splines on the clutch and the clutch contact areas that require lube, if you want to pull the gearbox out.

I hope you dont encounter the same problems i did, mine had also been sitting(not as long though) and some of my seals started leaking. But you probably wont find out until you start riding it. Rolling Eyes

Welcome to the forum Steve. Just about all has been covered. Don't try to start it before the fuel sys makeover it may get some black goo in the pump from the remainders of the vibration damper. If you intend doing a restoration then things like the spline lube would not be neccessary but if you intend a rolling resto then all is required before riding.

Good point about the spline lube Bert 2.0.

Another thing Steve, if you're buying parts, have a look at Moto-bins or Motorworks (sp?) and Sherlocks in the UK. Check their sites for pricing and compare it to Munich Motorcycles in Perth, WA.

Google is your friend!

The cost of parts can be cheaper to buy and send to Australia that it is from Munich Motorcycles just for the part alone.

Microfiche that shows all the parts for your bike is available from Max BMW Motorcycles in the USA. Google them as well.

A "flushing " oil change using diesel engine oil would be good first up, consensis here is to do this is anyway every few changes . This is to remove gunk built up especially in the starter sprag clutch which is known to give trouble.

the enterprise sat for 10 years did what blakey said and she started up ( had to change fuel pressure regulator as well )and hasnt missed a beat yet

Welcome aboard Steve. It seems like you've been given a laundry list of chores but don't worry. These bikes are highly reliable and the more you ride, the more you'll appreciate them. Let me add to the list...tires tires tires. Even though the tires might look ok with lots of tread, they get hard and dont stick well. Careful riding until you can afford to replace them.
