G'day everyone. I am another new member from Australia, residing down south in Melbourne.

Like many my bike history started a while ago with Japanese bikes. Yamaha RD350LCs were my bike of choice and I still have 2 very bent and broken versions in the garage.

My partner recently got her Learner's Permit and bought herself a Harley to cruise around on. The idea of cruising together was irresistible, but buying a cruiser seemed a step too far for me. After a bit of looking around, K bikes seemed to tick all the boxes. Comfortable but not a cruiser and still fun. Cheap but well manufactured and reliable (for their age).  Most importantly, they seem to have character and a unique place in the bike world. 

The search began and after looking at bikes at wreckers and cafe racers of questionable quality, I settled on a 1985 K100RS that the owner had spent a bit of time and money cleaning up. As it has a tank leak, some electrical gremlins and runs a bit rough I was able to get it for the right price. Hopefully all the issues will be fixable with the info available on the forum (already solved one of the electrical problems).

Plan is to get it on the road as soon as possible to find out what I like and what I want to improve.

Welcome naut023, do we call you nauty for short?

I think of bricks as all rounders and even better for cruising than Harley's. You can put on higher bars and highway pegs, but I spose it's better to leave as it is.

I'm thinking the tacho needle is too low and should be sitting at 0 rpm.

I bet you're right that any problems can be fixed with the help of the forum.

Welkome to this great Forum. Nice to have someone from Victoria and hope you can get the beast purring then keep an eye on this forum for opportunities to meet some us in the Ozzie Krew in person on rides - even bring your partner along on the cruiser as we won't take the piss too hard after the first few minutes.

That tacho needle has probably been off to lift the faceplate some time in it's life and then put back onto the spline out of alignment.

To keep you amused have a look for the thread labelled "Southern Ride", there's been one in the first quarter of the year for a number of years now and we get into or very close to Vic on those runs.

First full day working on Lagertha (yes i have watched too much Vikings) and I have managed to get all the lights working, front brakes filled with fluid and bled. Found the rear brake master cylinder is missing pieces so I will need to get an overhaul kit for it.


Tomorrow's job is to over-pressure the tank to find the leaks. Just got to find an effective way to plug all the holes.

Could I make a suggestion regarding repairs to your tank?

I have had to repair both my K1100 tank (now departed) and my K75 tank. I chose the route of finding an engineering shop that could weld aluminium, boat builders are a good place to try, and have the tank properly welded up rather than using epoxy or similar. Both of my bikes had corrosion leaks at the lowest point on each side, no doubt from moisture collecting there.

The weld repair may require some paint repair but I believe the weld is the most permanent solution.

My BIL is actually a boat trailer maker, so once I find the leak I will get him to take a look. Thanks for the suggestion.

You don't need to lift the head to put a helicoil in. Grease the drill bit and go in slowly; keep pulling back and cleaning off the shavings; regrease and go again. Ditto the helicoil tap.  You will get 95%+ of the shavings and the rest will be quite happily ejected through the exhaust valve.

Ok that’s will be my fallback option. I am going to take it into the workshop and see if they can sort it first. Assuming I can get my hands on a van to get it there.
