Hi,

Having just got the bike I've had a good poke around. Most of the loom looks good. I'm just wondering what purpose the green insulating tape in the photo serves. I think this is the underside of the ignition barrel. The ignition and in fact all electric (except ABS) work fine.

Should there be a rubber boot where the green tape is? Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

Ignition barrel taped up - ideas please? Igniti10

the switch mechanism fits on bottom of the body of the switch lock assembly ....i would suggest it would be a good preventative to help seal out moisture ...id be guessing someone has been there before

yep a good sealing rubber boot would be great ...but they often just catch and hold moisture ....rubber around the sealing /joint between the two parts would be better ..perhaps a little silicon around the wire terminations might help stop capilary action as well

G'day MT350 Explorer,on the K75 there is a plastic boot over the bottom part of the switch. It seems to come off very easily and has a gap for the wire loom.Cheers Tom

Thanks Guys, I'll look to take the tape off and put a smear of silicone perhaps in its place. It might be a bodge but a better one than the green tape probably!

Cheers
Dave

Guys,

On further investigation the ignition switch loom connector is rotten where it meets the ignition barrel. The plastic is shot. I've seen some description of how to refurb one of these but have decided to replace with a new one as it's effectively safety critical - I don't want the ignition potentially cutting out. Apparently the connector is held on with a grub screw? Could someone please confirm this is correct and describe where it is?

Best
Dave

About 30mm down from top of the lock housing, covered (secured) with a dab of red paint.

Thanks Inge, much appreciated. I get the feeling this might be a 3 minute job or a lengthy and frustrating one.

Place your bets! Very Happy

Watch out, so you don`t loose the screw....it`s real tiny.
(better do it inside, if possible).

Fitted the new ignition loom today and gave all the wires and frame beneath the tank a darn good clean; 87K miles of black grime came off pretty well. New loom went on no probs and I have a spare grub screw should anyone ever need one!

I will need to look at the dash illumination - nice green glow on the right but not much light to speak of on the left.

Best
Dave

Have a look at the other thread about using LED's in the there.
They should outlast the bike!
