I have read about and seen the 'U' shaped hole in the engine case side of the oil pump fitting.
"Don't get gasket material in the U shaped hole" - fine...
But does that mean only the hole - or no gasket from the hole to the outside of the casing - hole to the inside of the casing?
What is it that the hole does?

Cheers, M

The U shaped hole is the return channel for pressure relief valve.
I think this document would answering your questions.

OK, that makes more sense to me.
I put the pump on and had a nagging feeling that I had done something wrong, so I took if off again. sure enough, there was sealant in the 'U' hole. I cleaned up the 'U' and re-assembled.

I use to confuse those ringing alarm-bell sounds in my head with the neighbours phone, but I take a bit more notice of them these days.

Cheers, M
