OK folks here is the first dumb question. I started dismantling the girl today (6/89 K100 RT). One crash bar is broken off but the other is fine. Problem is I cannot work out how to get the crash bar off the good side so I can remove the lower fairing. Not listed in the workshop manual either. I tried unscrewing the broken stub of the other side to see what happens but it appears to be undoing the whole thing rather than just the part that held the crash bar.

Do I need to take the rubber cap off the outer end of the crash bar? If so how do I get it off? Had a go on the crash bar that is broken off but could not work it out.

All help appreciated. Simple words are good short ones are better!!!!!

ill be watching this too ...as i want to install some crash bars one day ...(after i find some with out some rediculous price attached )

but looking at some pics ...i think there is a rubber cap that hides a nut in the tube at the top bar mount ...i guess a long extension will get a socket in there to undo it .....i still have the mounts for crashbars on mine ....and it looks like an 8mm thread ....so im gussing maybe a 16 or 17mm socket would be fitting in there ....at a guess...
that nut mounts to another bolt/nut type adaptor that screws into the engine mount outer (19 mm i think from memory) ......the bolt through the frame has a nut at the back of it....
i think the bottom mounts present themselves without too much hassle dave .

maybe someone else has them fitted as well ? and knows the routine ?

Under the top plastic endcap there's a nut with 8mm internal threads, so a 13mm socket will/should remove it, then there's a rubber centred stud with threads on either end. This might spin as you attempt to loosen it. An air impact socket, long breaker bar or quick action on your part might help spin it of.

Cool

As TWB stated The end cap has to come off, I recently had to change two top rubber bushings and found that once a 13MM socket has removed the nut in the tubing [I used 3/8 drive for access] and the rest of the tube was removed a socket [if I remember 22 - 24mm]a long extension and a breaker bar did the job, one end of the rubber bushing has a longer thread than the other, longest goes through the tube.

Thanks for the advice guys. Bar is off and the lower LH fairing will be next. I noticed a lot of missing chrome that was not evident when it was on the bike. Both bars are pretty solid though so will look at a re-chrome later on.

Do you need to take off the radiator cover before the side panel?

You don't have to take off the radiator cover but you have to remove the 2 screws holding it to the side panel.

I just found a picture of the crashbar mounting but it's a bit late....

Hey Crazy Frog,

In picture 1 I see a rubber grommet on the fairing for the crash bar pass through. Did you add that or am I missing it on the fiche? If you added it, what did you use?

This is not my bike but the one of Crazy Frog #2 (My twin brother)

Here is a place where you can find gromets: http://www.midatlanticrubber.com/grommets.htm

Cool

Certainly looks better for the grommet Bert, but of course am I not correct in saying you have modified yours by removing the lower piece
under the crash bar for ease of fairing removal.

Even with the cut, a piece of rubber would look better. On of these days I will do it.
