Mud up to the crankcases. Much to my surprise I was told I was the only one that managed the last corner (top) without a foot down. I confess to some quite serious clutch abuse...

I recall, in my brief time living in Williston, Vermont in the '70s, that a break would be called from school during the late Winter melt. The big yellow buses could not drive on the majority dirt roads due to mud as Laitch has pictured. In fact, it may well have been known as 'mud break.' Williston likely does not have many dirt roads these days. All malls and condos.

Truth be told, while it's easy to be cynical, and one has plenty of opportunity at a large rally (Did you buy the catalogue when you plonked down your dosh for that shiny new bike?), there are heaps of riders, not literally, but sometimes, who get seriously into the BDR of each state and really ride those wildebeests into deep territory. BDR refers to Backroad Discovery Routes, as much off sealed roads as can be ridden in each state. There are maps published for it. 

Something here reminds me of those, big, heavy beasts, trundling through against all odds...something about Germans sitting stoically through five hours of Wagner music...oh, the suffering.

In fact, the Touratech USA rally is on in rural Plain, Washington the last weekend in June, not far from the Cascade Country Rendezvous in Cashmere. There will be plenty of middle-age pain in Plain those three days.

It's called Spring Break; it happens in Mud Season—usually mid-March—except we had two other mud seasons preceding it. One was in late December '23; it was overlapped by a blizzard. The other was in February '24. Each of those was called a Gimmea Break.
